Why Are Blacks Hated The World Over?

In posting the article about "Canadian" being the code word for black, I started to wonder. Why does it seem every single race or ethnicity has a word that is used with a negative connotation to refer to black people?

Why are we so hated? How long has this hate persisted? I understand in the U.S. we had a history of slavery, that can explain the race issues that affect us even to this day. But what about other ethnicities? The Jewish, Turks, Indians, Hispanics, and even Asians(To celebrate Black History Month, Kenneth Eng Posted an article titled "Why I hate Black People", and the paper actually posted this article, why would they do that)? Heck per Soila even Ethiopians and Somalians? Why do they look upon being black as bad? Is there is strong history between the Jewish people and black people? I know there is a large Indian population in South Africa, but what is the issue there? What shared history do we have with other ethnicities that make them dislike us? Why are we considered the bottom of the totem pole world over?

Like it was asked in the comments of the other post. What is so repulsive about being black? What is disgusting about it? What is wrong with being black?

Most people will say they don't hate or dislike black people, but there are examples of these same people in the world every day who do things that prove otherwise. My mother used to always tell me that sometimes she think outlawing segregation was a mistake, not because segregation was great, but it was obvious where you stood in the eyes of white people. They weren't ashamed of their hatred, they showed it to you, and you knew to stay away. They didn't pretend to like you and talk about you behind your back or in whispers. In her eyes it made life easier.

"Is there is strong history between the Jewish people and black people?"

I am not Jewish but I have heard a loosly based argument, it goes something like this... According to the Old Testament the man named Noah, his three sons, with there wives survived the flood. Ham, Shem, and Japheth, (I can't remember if the names are exactly correct) Afterward Ham saw his father drunk and supposably molested his father in his sleep. When he woke he put a curse on Ham saying that Ham and his lineage will always be the servants to the lineage of his two brothers. Apperantly Ham's lineage is where the Black race comes from, Shem the Asian lineage, and Japheth White.

Jewish people believe they are Gods chosen people. So it wouldn't be hard for me to believe that there are some racist Jews out there.

Scientist have proved through mitochondrial DNA that all races come from three lines. There is a bottle neck at about 30,000 years ago on the Y (Male) chromosome where cellular DNA on the X chromosome (female) dates back to about 50,000 years ago. If thats the case it would explain the three males all being brothers sharing the same DNA and the wives having no relation to eachother would have completely different DNA from eachother... Anyways I will have go back and look all this up, I could be screwing it up.

One of the reasons 'Blacks (in America especially) are despised the world over is that it is convenient.

The word 'bully' comes to mind.

Bullies do not care whether he/she/they are right or wrong, they feel that because they CAN, they will overtake a particular person whether it is for lunch money or denying them some form of advancement. I dare say even basic respect is denied.

To be sure, some Blacks make it VERY easy for us to be despised by doing things that are foolish. But then again, whatever Blacks do that is not in keeping with law and order is magnified to the nth degree. That being said, most Blacks live their lives out by being law abiding and hard working citizens.

One of the things that is problematic is that most non-Blacks only see what is going on in the so called Black ghettos in the urban areas.

Do they not know that the majority of Blacks live in rural or suburban locales spread out across the nation?

These law abiding Blacks are scarcely mentioned when articles of 'Why I hate Blacks' surface. Many Blacks (American) are invisible to non-blacks. If someone mentions this, you will often hear, "They are doing what they are SUPPOSED to be doing."

Funny thing though, because most Blacks are doing ‘what they are supposed to be doing’, why are they (the majority) not mentioned whenever someone wants to tell the world 'Why Blacks are problematic'?

There is a major benefit to those who seek to denigrate Blacks overall as a group. It perpetuates in the minds of such people that Blacks are inferior in every way; except perhaps sexually.

This would not be a problem if it were a small number of people who felt this way. But hatred and denigration of Blacks is a learned behavior. It is taught by family and communities and by God, whole nations.

This ‘teaching’ of Black denigration is sometimes passed from generation to generation. It has been going on for so long that if you were to ask individuals about it, they would likely tell you, “I don’t hate Blacks.”

It’s not something most non-Blacks even think about on a daily basis. It’s too ingrained in the psyche.

I think the insult for many Blacks in America is that many of the non-Blacks who now reside here are able to be here due to the hard work Blacks in the 60s and 70s did to make sure equality was there for all. Not just Blacks.

People really do not know this history. Or they do not want to know it.

What I say to Blacks is this: Whatever you do is being monitored by the world. Be careful that you present yourself with dignity.
But even that is not enough.

Example: I am a bit of a fashionista; but not a flashy one. The stares (of shock and disdain) come from people who seem to think either what I am wearing is fake or I must have stolen the wares. How silly!

If I work, it should seem obvious that I can buy myself something nice. I’ve had Asian and Russian people actually touch my handbags or coats and ask me where I got said items from. These are not colleagues. These are strangers.

Its like WTF? Would you ask a White woman the same thing? And I'm like, "Why are you touching my personal items???? I don't know you." This mindset is very telling.

Overall though, just remember that the denigration of Blacks is a Learned Behavior. So it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Why are blacks hated?

1. Check out the FBI crime statistics, they do most of the crimes.

2. Black people smell like shit, especially when they're sweaty.

3. Black people are the color of shit. The darker the berry the more shit it contains. It's that simple.

4. Blacks on average have an IQ of 70 (the average IQ overall being 100).

5. If a black mates with another race, the resulting offspring look and smell like shit, are stupid, and are more likely to commit violent crime.

It's that simple.

I think that there are many reasons that blacks are hated. The first would be probably the fact that we were slaves and because we were slaves other people will always see us as slaves. Because we will always be seen as slaves, there will always be resentment when you make any kind of advancements as a people. Another reason why we are hated so much is because of the self hate that we display. If you dont love yourself, why should anyone else love you. Blacks can be like a barrel of crabs. Especially our beautiful sisters. We absolutely rip each other apart. We often look down on each other. In fact we even point out faults about each other that other groups of people would not have known if we would not have pointed out those faults or shortcomings. We air our dirty laundry too much. I am sure that some other minorities actually look at us as a reference with regard to "what not to do" to each other as a group. Some of us will turn on each other in a minute if a white person accepts us over another black. We lose respect from people because of the fact that a majority of us dont eat right, exercise and suffer from all kinds of diseases as a result obesity yet we will blame most of our health problems on the racist health system. I dont think that it is so much that we are hated just because we a black. That is only a part of it. We are not respected. When you look at the news, crime is a big one... a huge one. I travel to other cities a lot because of my job and the only thing that you see on the news is black men killing someone. It is the same news story on every channel in every city at 6:00. Black men committing crimes. Even foreign blacks hate American Blacks because of that. Yet the crime rates are also high in the Caribbean and Africa. When you see the Caribbean on TV, the focus is the blue sea and the white sand a vacation spots. In actuality, the murder rates are very high in the Carribean along with extreme poverty. Yet it is focused on more with Black Americans. And Africa is the poorest country on Earth and that does not help with the black image worldwide. Starvation over there, AIDS, not even infracstucture in 2008. And the only way that Africa will be built up is by white men going over there and building it up. And when they finally start doing it, a lot of white people will become even richer. The Africans will not even benefit from it. People around the world dont even realize that there are lots of Black American millionaires out there who are not athletes or rappers. There are black american millionaires who are business owners. There is a large Black American middle class. You dont see those images enough. With white people there are so many different images of them that we cant just stereotype them as anything but pretty, rich and powerful. Not enough people read Black enterprise. Look at how BET represents us. People dont respect us. Also, we raise hell about things that we should not be raising hell about but we dont focus enough on things that we should be focusing on such as Imus. Imus is an ass and should have been made to apologize. I have seen him in interviews. He definitely is sorry. By making such a fuss over him making those comments, you make white people think that we are so sensitive and hate our hair so much. I love black hair and black features. We need to focus on loving our hair and teaching our children to love our hair. A comment was made by Bill O'Reilly about how had a good time at Sylvia's and he was suprised that nothing broke out or something I dont remember. And you better believe that most white people think and some blacks. Yes, I think that that was a stupid comment but too much time was spent talking about it. Dont we have bigger fish to fry? We need to focus on such things as improving education, preventing the generational cycle poverty and out of wedlock childbirths. Also, a lot of time the racism and racist labels are used when in actuality the label is not needed. We should be using that label because it is often overused. People of other races feel that they have to constantly walk on eggshells around black people. And one final thing that I want to say is the support of black women for black men through thick and thin although they do not support us. 70% single bf rate, 70% black families headed by bw yet we still support those negroes no matter what. It makes other groups lose respect for us as women. They either laugh at us or pity us. Also we spend too much time discussing whether or not they (white people) like us which does nothing for our psyche. I love the messages that are being sent by these blogs about looking at all of our options and dating out however some of these (such as this blog discussion) is depressing. We have to stop focusing on whether others love us or not and focus on loving ourselves.

The anonymous blogger who posted the witless comment is the prime example of why blacks maybe preceived as being hated the world over. It's plain and simple...IGNORANCE and FEAR. When Americans fear something they will try to reduce it to the lowest possible form in an effort to dehumanize...a prime example being the "sh*t" reference by the anonymous blogger.

Your post made some great points. One thing though, please use paragraphs. Your post came across as just one run on statement. What you said was important and everyone should read it (so no disrespect to you).

One thing you said that I would really like to comment on is this. Black women please stop tearing one another down.

I cringe when I see some of the bickering on these blogs. I do not care so much about airing laundry as much as I care about the viciousness we seem to have against one another about nonsense such as hair, or we vs. them.

It takes away from the blog topics. Instead of us sharing our stories with each other, it turns into a finger pointing contest of who can tell someone off better.

As to the 'Why Are Blacks Hated The Word Over?' topic, I will say that like the 2nd poster, it is ingrained in the minds of people to look down on blacks.

Whenever people look down on someone else, in their eyes it makes them look better.

I also agree that most blacks here in the u.s. are law abiding. Pay taxes and so on. For those who are black detractors, this does not register on the meter. Or if it does the progress of blacks in the u.s. gets muted in favor of crime stats and such.

Keeping your eyes on the prize of excellence and accomplishments is one way to negate all the vitriol that is spewed at us.

I believe it's all in one's head. You do what you put in your mind to do. Give the universe and feed your brain/soul a negative vibe, you reap negative results back.

there's an old jewish story said to be true:

A sage was on the verge of death and actually died. A few minutes later he revived again.

As he tettered between life and death, his friends surrounding him asked, "what did you see when you died?!"

His response: This world is upside down! Those who are of value to God are on the bottom here and those who are of least value is on the top.

Miriam said...

Casper: the Ham myth is just that a myth. I think its spread by those with an agenda, but any self respecting Jew knows that Ham is not 'all the black people in the world'

The curse was on Canaan (Ham's fourth son. why? I dunno). So he surely had other sons who looked like him.

Other interesting Jewish things

about blacks is:

According to the Talmud, one learns wisdom from the Africans ( story )

I don't know why but BF (black folks) seem associated to me with the South and white folks to the north.

Is that a normal view?

Anyway, the South usually symbolize wisdom. North symbolizes wealth (according to Judaism anyway)
Also, the world is dominated by Europe and America these days. by jewish lore, these are all decendents from Esau. Just read hitler's speech and you'll understand. The spirit of Esau is to divide and conquer -by any means.

okay enough about what the Jewish people say.

My own personal opinion:

(1) is that they are sitting ducks. The most obvious people that can be castigated and hated. The color stands out. shoot! even dark Indians are hated by other indians.

(2) Blacks are now turning their own wheel. They have learned to keep the black hatred by hating themselves.

(3) The world /or God perhaps is trying to get BF to turn towards each other in love? As long as BF hate each other, they are dividable and conquerable

My own opinion:

(4) I have a suspicion that BF are very down to earth and truthful people. They are not so much about sophistication, naturally. And I think this world more and more hates truthfulness, hates plain and obvious.

(by sophisticated I mean clever, like a politician, for example)

Miriam said...

One more thing, I do find it interesting that if one Jew does something wrong, the whole Jewish people are blamed.

Also when one black person does something wrong, the whole Black population is blamed, too!

Miriam said...

Sorry Siditty! One last thing. Ham in Hebrew only means heat, hot, burn. So it could be that Ham was already dark. Was already "blessed black."

Also, in the Talmud itself, it describes the Jewish people as dark, boxwood color. Jews aren't white. (Well, the European ones are lol)

I just want BF to know that there is a deep history that they possess. No white man will tell it. Its up to US to get our acts together and dig up our history. Then ONLY THEN will we know why we are so hated and what is meant to be done about it.

But this can be changed by our generation if we put our heads to it. We can de-condition ourselves of our ancestors conditioning without forgeting their experiences coz when we hold on to it not only do we turn on each other, but we also become reverse racists in the highest degree.

Hi Siditty! I found your blog randomly one night and I love it! Your writing style is so personal. It's like having coffee with a friend.

But as to your blog posting, I agree with gina b. For every Black person shown on the news, there are 100 other Black people going to work, school and just living life.

I think this is why people of other races struggle when meeting Black people. I don't mean hi and by, I mean actually getting to know a Black person.

I've told my White friends when they meet Black people at work and/or school, quite focusing on their race. They KNOW their Black and don't need you to remind them. Black people have families, hobbies, goals and intrests. Ask about that.

I'm Black and a woman. You don't have to just insult my race. You could tell me you hate the Cowboys. Now THAT's insulting!

WOAH... Back up! I didn't say these were my views I strictly stated this is what I heard. I never stated that these were facts or that I even have any belief in any of them. I have even heard that the mark that was put on Kain for killing his brother Able was making him black so the world know he was marked by God. ALL of these things I have heard from JEWISH people.

Another thing, if we are going according to the old testament the languages wern't confounded until the Tower of Babelon which was after The curse of Ham. Which means the hebrew language most likely came after Babelon. Just something to chew on.

I don't believe God hates an entire race or continent. As the supreme judge I don't think God would be very good at his job if he did. I believe God loves all of his children. Even if the curse did happen, one man's curse has no bearing on who God decides to bless. Noah in fact was just a man.

Esau intermarried with Ishmael's lineage and that is where the Arabic people's come from. Also with there hatred for the Jewish people.

One thing your right about though is I am an AngloCeltic and my perspective of things is never going to be as accurate as the someone who is on the inside of the issue.

By putting a catchall on "Any self respecting Jew" Your automatically saying that if a Jew has any other opinion then they are not self respecting.

As far as the first Anon is concerned I am surprised your comment even made it past moderation... But I am sure Siditty has her reasons.

Trust and believe people, the true 'powers that be' know that blacks are not an inferior group of people.

I am not speaking of the ones who spew verbal/written hatred. The people who truly have much financial finesse and have PHds in world history know very well about the strengths of blacks.

And those who are born in families that are traditionally well educated in global history have known for quite a long time that blacks are not inferior.

It is all a ruse. Get everyone to look down on a particular group of people.

After a period of time, everyone including the group being looked down upon believes that they are indeed inferior and deserve to be hated or treated with disdain.

It is not all so impossible. Just think how many black women have been raised to believe that they are not attractive. And that only a black man would want to date/marry us. Hmmm sounds familiar yes?

Now in adulthood, some black women are saying, "Hey, I AM attractive. And if black men cannot see this and does not respect me, I will date non-black men who will appreciate all of me".

Depending on how long it takes for the ruse to resonate among the peoples (in blacks case many, many years), it might take even longer to overturn the falsehood of blacks being inferior.

Casper,

I hope you didn't feel that my post was attacking your post. It was more attacking that myth that just needs to die down already.

Tower of Babel -according to Jewish teachings, they just all began to speak many different language, not that anyONE language was confounded.

Kain with a black mark -lol, its just too much! this I haven't heard.

Noah was in fact a man. -true words! And why does anybody want to keep spreading this myth til this day is beyond me. Maybe they think their Noah was a god? lol

re: Esau -i'm not sure where your getting at

re: Self respecting Jew -I mean any Jew -or anybody for that matter- that can't see the oddity OF dumping on one ENTIRE race and not suspect an agenda is going on -yes, I do think they have a wrong opinion. ESPECIALLY if they are going to profess to use the Torah for what they know.

That, to me doesn't sound self respecting -i.e. proud enough and comfortable enough in your own 'skin' (no pun intended) that you don't need to feel 'bigger' than someone else, or another group.

Then again There are Jew (reform, conservative, reconstructionist who have completely different beliefs than the Torah. Those I can't speak for. I can only speak for Orthodox or other Torah observant Jews. We only have one Torah)

Miriam said...

One last thing. I do have an interest in saying what I am about to say because I am black and Jewish.

However, I'll say it anyway: beware of learning for just 'any Jew'. Sometimes just for convenience, they'll say something like I remember a Jewish man saying to a black guy they saw taking a peek at a talmud. They said to him, "don't touch that! It'll make the book unkosher!"

All this was just so he wouldn't delve deeper. He was a racist and there are racists out there trying to keep racism alive by spreading their filth.

(to me that man was NOT a good person).

That would be awfully presumtuous of me to assume that God is going to sentance everyone that doesn't believe what I believe is going to Hell. I have gotten knee deep into christians for getting judgmental, and I personally don't think God likes it to much when his children start doing his job for him.

Professionally I will always take a secular argumet instead of using a faith based argument. The reason being is that the second you say anything about faith you are automatically discredited. so really this is a rare thing for me to even go this far into what I believe.

Boom and Grata responded to my original post about blacks presenting self with dignity with the following:
----------
"I disagree. Black people have proven that we're just as smart as any other race and we're not inferior to anyone. Yet that hasn't stopped people from thinking that we're less than nothing.
Black people need to stop trying to prove themselves to other races".

-----------
To Boom & Grata,

When I mentioned that, "What I say to Blacks is this: Whatever you do is being monitored by the world. Be careful that you present yourself with dignity." I also added, "But even that is not enough."

I think anyone (Black and others) should be careful to present oneself with dignity. Not just to prove to anyone that you are to be respected.

Just wanted to clear that up. Walking with 'dignity' does not mean sucking up or trying to prove anything to anyone (regardless of race).

Dignity is having some pride in oneself. I walk with it because I KNOW I am alright being black.

That is all.

Good points you make but in defence of the Hair Task Force, we are simply trying to save black hair. Our particular beef is with the weave which to us is a symbol of lack of self acceptance. So it all looks ugly but there is a purpose to it.
And BTW other groups tear each other, in some ways more visciously than we do.

Grata,

You and the Hair Task Force have a right to your opinions however it really is up to an individual to wear their hair in whatever way they deem appropriate.

It might be a symbol of 'lack of self acceptance' to the Task Force but to others -- it is not.

It is all about choices.

I certainly respect the views of the Hair Task Force. I am also hoping the Force also respects the choices of how others may choose to make in terms of hairstyles.

I actually, wasn't responding to your post. I was adding onto what Boom was saying and expressing long held opinions regarding blacks' (and I mean all) pathologic approval seeking behavior.
This behavior among blacks is rampant and problematic to progress.

Prescribing the "walk and carry yourself with dignity and self respect" is well intentioned but at the moment sounds like a band aid on a deep septic cut.

Siddity,

In this day and age we should know exactly why blacks are hated and despised not whether they are or guessing at why they are.

My simple explanation has to do with our very physical nature. We are very distinct from all the other races.
All other races have alot more physically in common than Black African type people. They have straighter hair and lighter skin.
And thanks to Darwin, humanity came about by evolution. And thanks to the great anthropologisdst Coon, we have never crossed over to Homo sapiens. So to the rest of humanity we are a step behind in evolution.
And all you have to do is not necessarily look at white history and their dehumanization of blacks but look at the beliefs regarding humanity from the other minorities. That theme amongst them from Latinos to Japanese is very clear. Blacks are way inferior to them.
I have heard the most ignorant things said by these minorities. I have even had some of them use the "you are exotic" tone, a new way of reinforcing our position on totem pole.

So to me, this is the foundation on which all the apparent hate is laid.

1) Africans HAVE not always been slaves! Every racial/cultural group has developed some system of slavery. Europeans have enslaved each other long before their colonial quests. Jews have enlaved each other and so have the followers of Islam. Slavery still exists even in the 21st century.
2) The Biblical story of Ham, has been used for centuries in the modern era to justify the enslavement of people of African origin.
http://www.blacksandjews.com/CurseofHam.html. The interpretation of this story is the problem...not the story itself.
Read this:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/15/AR2005121501728.html
3)Hate is the flip side of Love. There is a very thin line between the exaltation and the denigration of African peoples. Africa can be seen as poverty stricken and destitute, but simultaneously a land of great natural wealth and beauty. African people(and the Diaspora) are seen as distorted images of God...but everyone wants to be like us!
4) It's imporant to understand global human history, because in it you'll find that each continet has had great civilizations rise and fall. It is the nature of human development.Africa has had the most and earliest civilizations,Asia is second,Americas is third and now Europe.
Let's not take our modern perspectives(crime stats, hip-hop culture, AIDS etc) and use those as a measuring sick for an entire group of people who have been on this planet since the dawn of time!
Peace

This is partially true. All the other races have at least one of those characteristics. You have Indians and some Asians who are just as dark/darker than black people. But they still have the straight hair to set them apart.

As someone who is Jewish and of West African descent I can tell you that the Hamitic myth (i.e. black people cursed because of Ham) did not start with us Jews. That myth was started by a 3rd Century Bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East, Bishop Ephrem to be exact.

Also, if you read in the Bible you will see that Noah cursed Canaan with being a servant. Ham and his other sons were not cursed. Cush and Luz were sons of Ham who moved into Africa. Jewish Oral Tradition gives reasons why Canaan was cursed by Noah. (Not God) Also, King Solomon married descendents of Ham so this disproves that idea.

Most Jews do not "hate" black people. There are prejudice Jews, just like there are prejudice African Americans, that is something that exists in EVERY ethnic group. It is also something that Jewish religion requires us Jews to extract ourselves from. Yet, people have free will.

Also, the assertion that we Jews think we are the chosen people, therefore we are prejudice is also a false assumption. The HEBREW Bible says that God chose Jews to do a particular thing, not be chosen for the sake of being chosen. According to the Hebrew Bible ALL nations have a mission from God and ALL nations are equal, being Jewish does not make us superior to anyone. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were not Jewish. They came before that designation, and they are considered models for ALL of humanity. They are also the patriarchs of the Jewish faith. We simply have a different mission than other nations.

Also, there are a number of Jews who have African or African American ancestry. I have been to a number of places in the world and have found that there are many people who do not hate "black" people. The problem is what EXACTLY does the word "black" denote in the first place? A skin color, a culture, or an ethnicity? What some people may have a prejudice against is a particular ethnicity or a particular culture. For example, when I was in Ethiopia the people I met did not hate black people. The issue in Ethiopia is that there are about 50 DIFFERENT ethnic groups with different cultures and languages. Somilia and Ethiopia are not the same, so what they often hate about each other has nothing to do with skin color it is ethnic, territorial, and cultural.

Ehav Ever said...

Another thing I would like to point out. The myth that Ham's descedents were cursed with blackness is completely false. The text that this comes from was a book that was doctored by European Christians. For those who don't know somewhere between the Middle Ages European Christians started censoring Jewish books. They also are known to have doctored a few of them, and destroyed others. The older versions of said text do not say such a thing.

Also, a large number of Jews here in Israel have African descent (North African, Ethiopian, etc). Just because someone met a few prejudice Jews, anything less than 200 Jews is only a few of us since there are about 15 Million Jews in the world, doesn't mean that those Jews represent us all. If that same logic were applied the other way that is like saying, Black people are all criminals because I met 5 black people who did crime. Just as this statement is illogical and untrue it works the other way also.

In terms of the Hamitic myth. As was mentioned before the Hebrew Bible says that Canaan was cursed not Ham and nother Ham's other sons who went into Africa. There are several theories why Canaan was cursed. One is that Canaan violated Noah, and Ham didn't correct him. Jewish text is clear that the Canaanites were the ones who, by their lifestyles, became servants.

I will have more later.

Ehav Ever said...

One more thing. The Hebrew Bible says that God chose Israel to be a Goi Qadosh i.e. a Set-Apart Nation or Holy Nation. In the Hebrew Bible God says he chose Israel because they were the fewest and weakest people. He never mentions it is because we are better than anyone. The Bible makes it clear that all of humanity is the same, with different missions.

By the way as someone who can read Hebrew, Aramaic, and a little bit of Arabic, I can tell you that the information on the web-site http://www.blacksandjews.com/CurseofHam.html is incorrect.

I looked at that site once and found that they often quote European English texts that were written more than 100 years. Many of these texts were translated and edited by Christians in Europe with an agenda to prove that slavery againt Africans was okay.

For example that web-site quote the Rambam as using the word Negro in one of his writings. The Rambam lived in the 1200's and he wrote in Arabic. The word Negro did not exist in Classical Arabic. I will post something on my blog concerning this issue soon.

ehav ever,

All the jews I have met have been prejudiced. That does not mean that all jews are prejudiced. I am just yet to meet one that isn't.

The reason it was shocking to me was because I expected them to know better. I had never heard of anti semitism until I travelled out of Africa. As a child we were more aware of the holocaust than slavery through movies and news programs. Naturally our sympathy was always with the jews.

So in surprise I confronted one jewish acquitance that is a graduate student of History. His response was, " Why should jews be held at a different standard from other people".

There is this naive sentiment among many blacks that we share a history and therefore share a destiny with the jews. I think this is unrealistic on the part of blacks.

I could be accused of being anti semitic, but I am just committed to reality. Like my Jewish acquintance pointed out, we should not assume that jews are different from the other races just because there are a few similarities in our history.

Since you are in Israel,

I would like to hear your views on how the newly migrated Ethiopian jews are treated by the society over there. My sister did her Masters in Israel and she was pretty sad about it.

Clarification on the above. We watched movies of the holocoust and being Africans and killed by our own governments, we saw it as simply German soldiers killing Jews. The whole concept of anti semitism was never understood.

My understanding was enhanced in america.

We are hated because we are unknown. We are hated because we are a mystery. People fear what they do not comprehend.

We are hated because people believe that we hate them too. We are hated because people believe that we will eventually retaliate for what we have gone through.

We are hated because we refuse to judge the immoral among us.

We are hated because we have not taken the power that was already ours in the first place, or used that power to force them to respect us whether they wanted to or not.

We are hated because a minority of us revel in publicly debasing themselves. We are hated because those of us who respect ourselves do not stop those who publicly debase themselves.

Blacks are not hated per se, but the things that the majority do are hated. People don't take the time to seperate the mistakes from the individual.

I am of Italian heritage and believe that our coloring has come from Africa. Every young person despite race has the potential to become better, it's a matter of personal responsibility.
This means controling tempers, working hard, and aspiring for greatness. This means everyone world over.

I want to put my arms around my black friends and protect them from the negative image the gets projected on them. The problem is this. Most blacks are middle class, most blacks do not commit crime. Most blacks are not what is portrayed in the media. People's biases have led them to believe this is the case. Most black men are not in prison. Most black people blend in to the general public. But we get placed on television, the public automatically assumes this is the majority and not the minority.

The difference is that Italian culture and others has developed into something more refined by good behavior, invention, art and class

In terms of invention, art, and refinement what about the Harlem Renaissance in modern day America? Are you saying black people for the most part don't exhibit good behavior. I find it hard to believe someone in this day and age believes that.

I am sorry, but I am taking your impression of blacks in America with a bit of bias and stereotypes, which aren't even true. This is what I am really curious about. What makes people think these negative attributes are the norm, when in reality the statistics and numbers show otherwise?

It seems to me when a person is confronted with something that strikes there pride, true or not, they tend to get a little upset (irate). Just the mention of the curse of Ham and everyone went up in arms. Reguardless of what the truth may have been, someone ran to google to find the first "credible" sorce they could find to refute the curse. Ehav Ever said...

Greetings Grata,

I hope you are well. You mentioned that all the Jews you have met were prejudice. My question to you then becomes how many Jews have you met? Where exactly where they from? Were they religious or not religious? These questions make a difference. As the person you talked to point out, slightly, there is no difference between Jews and non-Jews. There are ethical and logical Jews, and there are un-ethical and illogical Jews. This has been true THROUGHOUT Jewish history. The Hebrew Bible point this out, that these traits can be found in every society. Whatever problems plague the societies around the world can be found amongst some Jews also. The concept in Jewish religion is that if a Jew, or any person for that matter, chooses to really follow what the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) and Jewish tradition teach they can elevate themselves above such base level illogical behavior. Also, Jewish tradition teaches that there are some things that are logical even without a belief in God. So a Jew who rejects Biblical and outright non-logical

It would seem, based on your responses, that you have only encountered Jews from northern Europe. What you have to realize is that every Jewish community has some issue that they have to overcome. Jews from Europe sometimes, not always, have to overcome the idea that they somehow fit into Euro-American or European society. There are Jews out there that, on some level, think of themselves as white. Take off the kippa, shave off the beard, don't act religious and walla they fit into white society. Thus some of said Jews take on characters and prejudices found in certain elements of European or Euro-American societies. So there are some Jews, from Europe, who took on the prejudices of the societies they came from. There are some, not all, but some European Jews who are prejudice against Middle Eastern, African and Asian Jews. Often Jews who are prejudice against Africans and African Americans are also prejudice against Middle Eastern, African, and Asian Jews.

By like token, I know Jews who claim that ALL the African Americans they have met were always anti-semitic or criminals. So it seems that there are those who make the same point you mentioned, but from the other side of the spectrum. To those Jews who claimed that, I often ask them how many African Americans have they actually met, and from where. They are often surprised to find out that there are various African and African American ethnic groups. There are some Jews who use the word Nigger, because they have heard in rap videos and movies. I once told some young Israelis they shouldn't use the word, because as Jews we should stand on a higher moral platform. Their response was that if it was such a bad thing, why do so many African Americans use it. Now mind you the only African Americans they had seen were on MTV. So it seems that the conundrum here is that there are some African Americans who have only met prejudice or conniving Jews, and some Jews who have only met anti-semitic or criminal African Americans. Maybe both sides need to meet each other to dispel the myths.

The reality is that there are Jews from all over the world. There are Moroccan Jews, Algerian Jews, Yemenite Jews, Ethiopian Jews, Spanish Jews, Persian Jews, Egyptian Jews, Polish Jews, Syrian Jews, Lebonese Jews, Indian Jews, Chinese Jews, etc. That is why I said that meeting less than 200 Jews is no way indicative of what Jews believe or don't believe. Just as meeting 200 African Americans who do crime, speaks for African Americans. So Grata, I think the better statement is, You have met a number of prejudice people, who happen to be Jewish. Just as those Jews I mentioned the better statement, They have met a number of anti-semitic people, who happen to be African American.

Now where exactly does prejudice amongst some Jews, towards non-Jews come from? It on some level, comes from the various pogroms, slanders, forced conversions, massacres of Jews that have taken place in many parts of the world for the past 2000 years. In some parts of Europe, for example, Christians accused Jews of killing children and using the blood to make matzah on Passover. Then said Christians would invade the Jewish ghettos and murder, rape, and pillage. In some parts of the Middle East, certain Arabs would accuse Jews of not paying the Jizya tax, required by Ahl Thumma (non-Muslims) living in Muslim lands. Said Arabs would then go into the Jewish mellahh (ghettos) and murder/pillage, etc. In Yemen, about 300 or 400 years ago, a Jew in Sanaa (capital city) was accused of selling alcohol to a Muslim man. The king ordered all the Jews of Sanaa to be rounded up. Then all the rabbis of the city were executed in front of the Jewish community. All the Jews of Sanaa were kicked out of the city into the desert to die. The Jewish quarter was ransacked Jews were murdered, etc. There was also a law in Sanna for a number of years called the Orphan's decree. Any Jewish child under the age of about 13 or 14 whose parents had died was taken away as a ward of the state and forced to convert to Islam. I met a woman once in NYC whose parents lived in Yemen during the time the decree was still active. Her parents talked about Jewish children, many of whom were even orphans, being abducted and never seen again.

The only places that have never had a known anti-semitic past are India and China. At one time there was a Jewish population in the Songhay Empire (West Africa) until an Islamic cleric from Morocco convinced the local Immams to incite violence against the communities. So there are reasons, besides the Holocaust, that some Jews hold a resentment, better yet distrust, towards non-Jews. The idea is that if the non-Jews did it to us once what is to stop them from trying to turn back the clock. No different than how I once heard some African Americans say that once the Amendment runs out that made slavery illegal or voting rights legal for African Americans the US could go back to the days of old. In this sense Jews and African Americans have a common phobia about those who were once their enemies turning back the clock.

So the answer to the Jewish person you met who asked you why Jews should be held to a higher standard is, because when gave the Torah to Israel He required the higher standard of morality. By giving this answer to a Jew you force them to either admit that their is a religious standard that they should be following, or admit that they don't believe in the religious standard. If they don't believe in the religious standard set by real Judaism then anything goes.

I will answer you question about Ethiopian Israelis separately.

Ehav Ever said...

Hello Casper,

Glad to meet you and thank you for your words.

The main correction I would make to Solia's statement is that there is no such thing as a cursed race or a cursed continent. Therefore there is no such thing as a cursed people.

When Noah, for example, said what he said the agreement is that it was the behavior that made Canaan cursed. The Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition is clear that when people accept or take on unethical behavior that is when if you will they can become "cursed." One of the reasons is that such behavior can affect themselves and their descendants.

It is like a person who is a mass murderer and then has children. That kind of behavior affects the children in one way or the other. Thus the "curse" of said behavior can almost be looked as a curse upon the family. Yet, Jewish tradition of clear that people can break free of that cycle.

So the reality is, in terms of African Americans, that the Trans-Saharan and Trans-Atlantic trafficking of humans (I don't much care for the term slave trade. We are talking about human beings) brought a heavy burden on those who descend from the people who were enslaved. It placed a burden of enslavement, racism, social questioning, etc. on the their progeny. Some were able to break free of it and some were not.

Yet, it is possible that the descendants of enslaved people can break free of the cycle of pain and overcome the results of both situations. Thus the supposed "curse" becomes null and void.

Ehav Ever said...

Hello Grata,

In terms of your question about Ethiopian Israelis. There is really a long answer, but here is my attempt to sum it up in short. The Ethiopian Israelis who are doing the best here in Israel are the families who came here in the early 1970's. They have had more time to acclimate to Israeli society, which takes time no matter where you come from.

There were also some Ethiopian Jews who were expecting to come here and it to be like it is in the Bible. So imagine your whole perspective about Israel being that is ONLY the Holy Land and you will live like King David, King Solomon, etc. Then you arrive and the culture shock hits. What is a bank account, what is a mortgage, what is inflation, what is driver's license, what do I do when I need to complete a tax form, what do you mean my children do mandatory military service at 18?

In Ethiopia, Jews were forbidden from owning land by the ruling Ethiopian ethnic groups going back several hundred years. They were persecuted by Ethiopian Christians for hundreds of years. In fact when I was in Ethiopia in 2001 some of my friends told me that there were Ethiopian Jews who were hiding out because if it was known that they were Jewish they would be robbed or killed by some. Ethiopian Jews mainly lived in rural parts of Ethiopia where there wasn't much in the way of technology or contact with the Western World. So there is a huge element of culture shock that has to be factored in with moving to Western styled country.

The other reality is that it is not easy for anyone here. Israel has a lot of good points and it also has its points of difficulty. Every mass immigration here had some problem somewhere and it is not easy to take thousands of people and try to integrate them into a society overnight. Also, factor in that we often teeter on the edge of war with many of the countries in the area.

Also, one of the problems that took place was that Ethiopian Jewish youth were able to acclimate faster to living in Israeli society than their parents or grandparents. In Ethiopia you relied heavily on your parents or grandparents, now the tables turned. So what happened was that many Ethiopian Israeli youth turned on their family cultures. They felt that they knew more than their parents, because they were the ones who could get the better jobs. There are still a number of older Ethiopians who still are not able to speak Hebrew. Not knowing Hebrew here shuts you out of many areas of Israeli society. If you at least speak English you can still make it because a lot of people here speak English. In fact street signs are in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Yet, if your only language is Amharic (Ethiopian) then you have a limited pool of people you can interact with.

The Jews of Ethiopia were not the first to face these kind of problems. In the 1940's - 1960's the Jews of Morocco and Yemen faced the same kind of problems when they immigrated here in en masse. The major difference though was that both groups already had communities that had been here for hundreds of years. Also, Moroccan and Yemenite Jews have always had continuous contact with other Jewish communities. For the most part it was unknown that there were Jews in Ethiopia. The first mention of them in the known Jewish world was by an Egyptian rabbi who met some of them back in the 1400's. Also, there was a time when Ethiopian Jews didn't know that there were "white" Jews. They had never met a European Jew until about the 1700's or 1800's. The first European Jew they met, they didn't believe he was Jewish because they thought they were the only Jews left.

You also have other immagrants who are fighting for the same amount of small resources and such. All in all though Ethiopian Israelis are well respected by a large number of Israelis. They are known as being industrious and also nice people. A tour guide once said, With the Ethiopian Jews when they came here they wanted to be in the Holy Land so bad that any job you gave them they took it because they were doing it in Israel. When the Russian Jews came here they were picky what about they were willing to do and not do. Nothing was good enough for the Russian Jews and they are bossy.

Another issue that came up was that there were some major religious/legal issues that were vastly different between Ethiopian Jews and other Jewish communities. Matters as strong as Jewish identify and such. The standards of marriage and divorce are big issues in Judaism in terms of Jewish identity. So people began to ask, how exactly did Jews get into Ethiopia? When did Jews migrate into Ethiopia? Did they come from Egyptian Jews originally, or they did come from Yemenite Jews? When all of these questions began to be asked it sparked a lot of debate about whether they were really "ancient" or ex-Christians who decided to be more Judaic. Also, when the mass immigration took place there were non-Jewish Ethiopians who sneaked in and tried to pretend to be Jewish. So that further exasperated the issue of who was really Jewish and who wasn't.

One Ethiopian Israeli friend told me that when her family was leaving Ethiopia to walk to the Sudan to be airlifted to Israel they passed an Ethiopian Christian family who asked them where they were going. They said we are going to Israel. The Ethiopian Christian family said, hey lets go with them. There were also families who were separated during the escape from Ethiopia into the Sudan. During one of the revolts in Ethiopia, Ethiopian Jews could not be airlifted out of Ethiopia. Haile Sallaise at one point required that Israel pay him several million dollars to let the Jews of Ethiopia leave. His request for money was so high that Israel could not pay it. So Jews from Ethiopia took the risk of walking from northern Ethiopia into the Sudan. About 4,000 Ethiopian Jews died trying to do this. Many people lost family on this trek to get out. Later the Ethiopian government came back and made another demand for millions of dollars for Israel to get the Jews out. A large number of American and Canadian Jewish organizations raised millions of dollars to help Ethiopian Jews get out of Ethiopia. Finally, President George Bush (the 1st one) requested that Congress pay the money. (I am summarizing heavily here)

This is also not to rule out elements of prejudice that do exist here, the same as they exist anywhere in the world. Yet, the problems above play a bigger role in the problems. When you come from a environment that is agricultural and you have to compete with people who have a lot of steps ahead of you, there is going to be a problem. That is why many Ethiopians, when they first came here, ended up having to do menial jobs.

The best way for a 3rd World immigration to work here is for the children to go into the military and get whatever skills they can there. Move up in rank as much as possible, get the technical trade and the leadership skills. Many Ethiopian Israelis have been doing well by way of military service.

Grata,

Sorry for the long books, but as a Jew I can tell you there is never a short answer with us.

I made a few writing mistakes above, that threw off two of my points.

What I meant to say is:

Statement 1 Correction:
That is why I said that meeting less than 200 Jews is no way indicative of what Jews believe or don't believe. Just as meeting 200 African Americans is no indicative of what African Americans believe or don't beleive.

Statement 2 Correction:

So the answer to the Jewish person you met who asked you why Jews should be held to a higher standard is,

"Because when gave God the Torah to Israel He required the higher standard of morality. The giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai is really the ONLY thing that created Israel and the Jewish people. Everything else is a result of Mount Siani and rests on that tradition, belief, mythos, etc.."

By giving this answer to a Jew you force them to either admit that their is a religious standard that they should be following, or admit that they don't believe in the religious standard. If they don't believe in the religious standard set by real Judaism then anything goes. They can be as bigoted, spiteful, or hateful as humanly possible if they deny the above. Essentially a racist Jew is also an antisemite. You can't be against antisemitism without also being against racism, simply and plain. Both concepts come from the same tree.

"I hope you are well. You mentioned that all the Jews you have met were prejudice. My question to you then becomes how many Jews have you met? Where exactly where they from?"

ehav ever,

Thanks for your explanation.

I can not give you a figure of the number of Jews I have met. I have lived in three countries and along all my travels I have encountered Jews. I lived in Hollywood, socialized, worked etc for 2 years in a hostel and met people from all over the world and among them Jews. I have been in school for 3 years and have had class mates and Professors. Can I count them, not at the moment.
Your explanation is probably spot on but it doesnt take away the experiences. I guess that is how prejudice develops, you have a repeated bad experience with a certain type of people and your mind is set.
Do I think all Jews are prejudiced?

No, however I don't harbor the old naive feeling that due to similarities in history, I should expect acceptance and sympathy from Jews.

While you are looking at the Ethiopian Jewish situation , I think should also look at the story of Israel snubbing Rwanda when it tried to reach out to them after the genocide, Jewish activities in Apartheid South Africa and not to mention Madeline Albright's ( a holocaust survivor)withdrawal of much needed UN troups from Rwanda on the eve of the genocide.

My aim here is to show that this blind reverance and empathy for Jews especially by blacks should be evaluated.

ehav ever,

Thanks for the explanation on Ehtiopian jews. From what I have picked up, they are basically second class citizend and are treated as such.

I wonder if you heard about the blood donation scandal, where they donated blood and after they left it was all thrown away. They may have had legitmate fears of diseased blood, but don't donation centers check one's blood before they let them donate? All was it simply destroyed because they were Ethiopians?

An Israeli told me that the reason they are not easily accepted is because they practise an older form of Judaism.

obviously I am not an expert on the subject, my main objective is to be as realist on matters regarding race and racism as it pertains to blacks and that may include destroying long held views.

"Instead of seeing "those black people" other will think, "Oh, those nice, hard working people."

This is laughable! You only see nice hard working black people in the future? WOW!

In the future that you are imagining even if 99% of blacks act in your prescribed way, the one that that misses the mark will still taint the rest. In otherwords, the prejudice will remain the same with blacks as "currently lazy and classless" as when majority are living up to the said rules.SMH!

Greetings Grata,

I don't know if the idea that Jews and African Americans have a common experience is something that is widely accepted by any majority of African Americans. At least the ones I have met. I don't think that there is even a need to try and make a connection. People are people, as far as I am concerned, period. To your travels concerning the Jews you met who were prejudice, I would still say that their prejudice is in now way connected to them being Jewish. I would still venture that you have not met enough Jews for the issue to be predjudice Jews vs. prejudice people who happen to be Jewish. I have met Jews who have the same arguement against black people. I.e. the I have traveled the world they result is the same. My arguement is the same with those Jews, the issue is not one of antisemtic black people, but antisemitic people who happen to be black. By like token I would still say the issue you have faced are prejudice people who happen to be Jewish. I.e. their personal prejudices is not connected to them being Jews. As I mentioned most of the Jews Ihave met who were prejudice against black were also prejudice against Middle Eastern, African, and Asian Jews.

In terms of what went on in South Africa you once again have to deal with the real issue. The majority of Jews were not involved in either Rwanda or South Africa. Saying it was Jewish involvement makes it seem as if we were somehow all involved in it, or that a majority of Jews were involved. Why can't it simply be a matter of people who were involved. Madalyn Albright is in now indicitive of Jewish culture. She doesn't represent the Jewish people. That is like me saying Idi Amin, Charles Taylor, or OJ Simpson somehow speak for Africans or African Americans. You can go down the line of evil people who just happen to be Jewish, and I can easily point out how most of those people were not Torah observant Jews i.e. not living up to the standard I mentioned before. Without living by Torah, on some level, a person's Jewish ancestry means nothing. The only reason we are Jews is because of the religion, it is not the other way around. Take away the Torah and being Jewish really doesn't mean ANYTHING.

If the example is that some of the people who have done evil in the world happen to be Jewish, we could use that for any ethnic group. We could say that about a number of African dictactors and someone pin it on them being African. That isn't logical and those people don't speak for all Africans, which itself is a misnomer since there are thousands of ethnic groups in Africa.

If African Americans have reverance for something such as people, that is the first mistake. Reverance is something that should only be given to things that are higher than people. In the blind sense. The reality is, and the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) points this out that Jews are human just like anyone else on the planet. If you find corruption in humanity you find it also amongst Jews, because we are human. If you find apathy in humanity you will find it also amonsgt Jews, because as Casper said we all pretty much have the same DNA. The issue is that as Jews we are called to a moral high standard, by religious values. A Jew rejects the Torah is also rejecting his/her own Jewishness. Like I said before why would being Jewish mean anything if a a person rejects the morality that created the concept of being a Jew. At the same time the lack of morality of one Jew or even 1,000,000 Jew in no dictates that they speak for the 14,000,000 Jews out there. Once again I have made the same arguements to Jews who say things about African Americans and Africans as if them being African is the root cause of whatever beef they have with them.

Also, in terms of Rwanda and Israel. There are a number of Israelis and Jews who have worked to support the Tutsis in Rwanda. I once worked with an organization that was trying to bring awareness to Jewish communities in America about what was going on in Rwanda. The Yad Vashem (Holocoust Memorial) has done a number of things to help the Tutsi's in Rwanda. Also, the Israeli organization AMCHA has always been active in working with Rwandans who were affected by the geniocide. Just because you don't hear about it, doesn't mean that Israel isn't involved in helping people. Just like most people don't know that Israel secretely had Mussad agents helping the Igbo during the Biafra War in Nigeria. Israel is in a position where when iit does things it often has to do them secretly. Even flying an Israeli plane over certain countries is a big deal.

One of the things you have to remember is that the Holocoust doesn't affect all of us Jews in the same way. Not all Jews come from Europe. The issue with the Holocoust is not something that is talked about heavily amongst Middle Eastern, African and Asian Jews. It is an issue for us also because Hitler was starting to work with individuals to expand it to the those areas.

In terms of the issues with Ethiopian Jews here in Israel. Once again you in order to understand the situation of Ethiopian Jews in Israel, you have to understand how mass migrations happen in Israel.

Every mass migration had its problems, the Ethiopian Jews were not the first to experience 2nd class citizenship here. The Moroccan Jews and the Yemenite Jews experienced it first.

Take any problem the Ethiopian Jews had and go back about 40 or 50 years and you will find that Moroccan Jews and the Yemenite Jews experienced it when they first mass migrated here. The problem is one of Europeanism vs. Judaism. This is the struggle of the modern state of Israel. More on that later.

The problems with the Ethiopian Jews was not because their Judaismm was older. The oldest more ancient Jewish communities are that of Iraqi Jews, Syrian Jews, Persian Jews, Yemenite Jews, and North Atlas Mountain Jews.

Did you know that in the 1960's there was movement called Panter Shachor in Israel. It was inspired by the Black Panthers in America as well as the Civil Rights movement. It was made up of Middle Eastern and African Jews who felt that the European Jewish power structure in Israel was prejudice towards Middle Eastern and African Jews.

The issues with Ethiopian Jews is that as I mentioned, they went from agricultural to industrial overnight. If Ethiopian Jews for example came here with technical degrees and money their situation would have been completely different. In terms of their blood being dumped, in the 1960's some of who took Jewish children away from Yemenite Jewish families. As I mentioned every mass migrations have had problems, the Jews of Ethiopia face what MOST mass migrations from the Middle East and Africa has faced.

It is going to take about 20 years for them to overcome that. Many of them already have overcome it. The Moroccan Jews and Yemenite Jews did so if the Ethiopian Jews band together and not let go of their culture they can make it also.

One of the problems I see here in Israel is younger Ethiopians walking away from their culture, and chasing after American pop culture. The Yemenite Jews had the same problem about

In short Israel society is not perfect, but it is also a very great culture. Also, if the issue with Ethiopian Jews was a race thing I would be in a worse situation than them since I am darker than them, but I have had a good experience here. That is because I came here with a different situation than they did when they were airlifted here. If Israel was so against them they never would have been airlifted here.

Their current reality is one that has been faced by others, and overcome so sad to say they must buckle down and overcome the same way everyone else did.

ehav ever,

Thanks for your detailed and well informed response.

Keep in mind, I am not trying to prove that all Jews are racist. I am simply saying that the ones I have met have been.

I am aware of some humanitarian work btn Israel and African countries and Rwanda in particular. However from my recollection the initial response was a snub. Atleast according to the Rwandese government.

I would need time to dig out this information and will gladly send you the stuff I come by.

Israel was not the only country to snub Rwanda, every one did at its most time of need. The experience with Israel just left a bitter taste for them. This is because of what I will for now call the naive factor.

Now that all has settled and frankly mainly because of guilt, help is coming in from all directions.

So I wouldn't look at the work of these charities as genuine humanitarian help. Many in Africa don't fit the bill anyway.
And by the way, one of the Jews I met that was an outright racist worked with a charity organization in Senegal. His racism was targeted more towards AAs, atleast in my presence.

"I don't know if the idea that Jews and African Americans have a common experience is something that is widely accepted by any majority of African Americans. At least the ones I have met. I don't think that there is even a need to try and make a connection"

As we stand today there is indeed rising anti-semiticism among blacks and it is well documented and undeniable.
However the naivity, that is, the assumption that jews and blacks share the same history and therefore are inevitable allies has a long and quite complex history that is even rooted in religion.

In America, this naivity may be on the decrease but in Africa, where I am from (East), Jews a literary seen as God's chosen people and are held in high esteem to this day. It is this kind of naivity that I am against because like everyone else, Jews have their faults one of which may be racism towards blacks.

To understand AA naivity you would have to go back to the civil rights era when the two worked closely together.

I still meet AAs that have this naive sentiment of having a shared destiny with Jews because of a slightly similar history.

Now the muslim community in my country, which is a minority, may think otherwise (and I have never heard anti jewish sentiment from them) but they have no voice, so there is no real concept of anti semitism.

"That is like me saying Idi Amin, Charles Taylor, or OJ Simpson somehow speak for Africans or African Americans".

With or with out Idi Amin or Charled Taylor, the African is still perceived negatively as backward, savage etc So their images have little effect on the image of the African.

So far in your post I don't see you recognizing the possibility of racism in Israel towards the Ethiopina Jews. You chalk it down to being recent immigrants and facing the regular challenges that other immigrants face.
Having a sister who lived in Israel for 2 years as a student, she faced racism, not as intense as she would in America, but it was there nonetheless.

Africans who live in Arab muslim countries, though muslims and are theoritically brothers to the Arabs are still discriminated against.
I find it hard to believe that Israel would be different as per your discussions.

My main point of this post is that all non black races are racist towards blacks or dark skinned people. Jews have at some point in history and still in some places today beed considered the exception.
And it is this blanket passing of the Jews(mainly white) as non racist because of their history and some mythical/religious reasons that I am arguing against.

Ehav Ever said...

Greetings Grata,

I hope you are well.

Actually, in one of my posts I did mention that there exists racism in Israel. It exists more as classism though and started as a part of some of the movements out of Europe that tried to fit into European society. You may have missed my points about the Middle Eastern and African Jews who formed a Black Panther party in the 1960's in response to racism or classism from European Jews. As I mentioned before what the Jews of Ethiopia face is the same exact thing that previous mass immigrations from the Middle East, Africa and Asia faced. Like I said, you take any issue that the Ethiopian Jews faced/face and you can find that Jews from Morocco and Yemen faced them about 20 or more years ago.

Another issue is that those in the non-religious power structure have set things up in a way to try to keep the religious power structure from becoming to powerful. One of the ways they have tried to do this is to keep mass immigrations at odds so that they don't all shift the voting power towards a religious power structure. For example, one of the fears when the Yemenite Jews came was that about 97% of Yemenite Jews were EXTREMELY religious. The fear then being that they and other Middle Eastern Jews, who were becoming the majority would sway things towards the religious power base.

The bigger issues for Ethiopian Jews is one of education and finance. I have worked with several Ethiopian Israeli organizations those are the real problems.

Coming here without those two things makes it very difficult. Israel, just like a number of places, is somewhere if you have the money and education you have less of a problem here. I know several Ethiopian families who were a part of the 1st mass migration in the 1960's and 1970's and they are doing quite well here. They also stayed better organized as a community.

This is the reason that Ethiopian Jews who were part of the 1960 and 1970 immigration are doing better than the Ethiopian Jews who came in the 1980's and 1990's. This is also the reason that Ethiopian Jews who came here with advanced degrees and money are doing better than the ones who came here without those things.

In terms of your sister's time here, what she faced depends on several issues 1)Whether she is Jewish, 2)Whether she was mostly around Ashkenazi type society, 3)Whether she had a community she was a part of. How many Yemenite Jews was your sister around? How many Indian Jews was she around? How many Bucharian Jews was she around? How many Moroccan Jews was she around? What part of Israel did she live in? Was she in a religious community or a secular community? All important questions when one considers what elements of Israeli society she was around.

If your sister was not here as a part of a mass immigration her situation is going to be completely different that that of the Ethiopian Jews. The two don't relate, especially if she was here working on an advanced degree.

Africans and African Americans, I know of, who have the most problems here are ones who for one reason or another have to rely on the Ashkenazi power structure. Those of us who don't have to rely on it, and who keep our contacts within certain community contexts generally don't have race problems.

The other issue is when the Hebrew Israelites came here. They partially swayed some to think that anyone who wasn't Ethiopian Jewish and happened to be "black" they must be a Hebrew Israelite. After the first group of Hebrew Israelites came other Hebrew Israelites came on temporary visas and then never left and stayed here illegally. The Hebrew Israelites made it into a race issue, when in reality it was one of who is Jewish and who isn't, in terms of the ability to make Aliyah (Jewish immigration to Israel). This question actually affects all Jews whose mothers are not Jewish or have no evidence they are Jewish.

In terms of the Rwanda situation, there were Jewish and Israeli organizations working to help the Tutsis during the conflict. It didn't all start afterwards. There is a Tutsi professor in Europe who has been working with several Jewish organization since the problems began. His thought though is that the Tutsis are lost Jews, which complicated the issue some.

Also, I know you are not saying that all Jews are racist. What I am suggesting though is that you have met people who are racist who happen to be Jewish. There is a big difference between that and racist Jews. The latter suggest that their racism is connected to their Jewishness. The former suggests that they are simply racists for reasons that have nothing to do with the Jewishness, which since racism exist in some form everywhere would not be the case.

In terms of the niavity issue. As I mentioned before, people should first and foremost recognize there is a big difference between religious Jews and non-religious Jews. (Explained below) The other issue, as I brought up before is that most people only know Jews and Judaism based on the European Jews they meet. This is a problem, since Jews and Judaism is bigger than just the Jews of Europe. That in itself is a part of the naivety, i.e. a balanced knowledge of culture and history.

It is also an issue of understanding what the Bible really says. It doesn't say that Jews are chosen just because. It says we are chose to DO a certain thing. Not doing makes us unchosen if you will. That is why over and over Israel had problems in the world, when our ancestors weren't DOING what they were supposed to do. The Bible, at least in Hebrew, is clear that all nations have a mission and are chosen in their own rights. So the problem may be a naive understanding of what the Bible really says. Once again this isn't our fault as Jews, that is more on the people who are not correctly teaching the history.

Also, if you go back to one of my previous statements in terms of dealing with racists who happen to be Jewish. I said the following.

So the answer to the Jewish person you met, or any Jew, who asked you why Jews should be held to a higher standard is,

Essentially a Jew who is racist is also an antisemite. You can't be against antisemitism without also being against racism, simple and plain. Both concepts come from the same tree.

Ehav Ever said...

One last thing. I think yo misunderstood my comparisons with Ida Amin, Charles Taylor, and OJ.

My point is simple. Racism and Jewishness and Judaism are in no way connected. The existence of racists in an ethnic group does not reflect on the ethnic group. Just as tyrants who happen to be from an ethnic group does not reflect on an ethnic group. It doesn't matter what uneducated people think. What we are talking what is real and what is not.

The reality is that what people hate about certain Jews they have met has nothing to do with Jewishness or Judaism. Those are people simple and plain who are using their free-will in a negative manner. The reality is when people hate Africans or African Americans they do so for illogical and unethical reasons. They often can't pin down what they hate to a reality that exists within the whole. These are things that are personal in nature and not related to groups. These are things that are flaws in choice making and misuse of logic.

Any person can pull up a bad experience they had with a group of people and chalk it up to those people. The reality is that in most cases they only met a segment of said society. As I said before I have met Jews who have claimed that they have had bad experiences with Africans or African Americans and they swear on it as if the bad experience was because of the ethnic group or the culture, and not simply because of people being people.

When I have debated with fellow Jews who make racist or prejudice comments, I first get into the fact that they generally don't know the first thing about what they are talking about. They don't know history, culture, and thus are not speaking from a realistic base.

So going back to my point. A Jew who is a conscious racist, really isn't a Jew, he or she is denying the principles that make someone Jewish in the first place.

Usually, I have only seen white toilet pots. Why do they make it white all the time ? I never could figure it out. Its just insulting to ponder why you are hated for your color, may be not. It is only the feeling what you have for yourself and feelings mostly infused by your own opinions and few bad experience. For most men, your color hatred is going to out-shadow your true inner self.
The most fascinating man, I ever met was my 'black' professor. I could do anything to just get his glance but he thinks woman are only interested for 'Wrong reasons'. Its been long time since I graduated but could not still convey that he is 'the' most interesting person, I ever met. Any appreciation is returned back or just one line answer.
My question is why is it hard for 'Black Man' to accept appreciation ? My appreciation was not romantic or disrespectful but he is too preoccupied with his prejudice and he has judgment in his mind that I am trying to get some favor. Now that smart way to avoid people who 'like to you' by being rude ;) than wonder why you are hated ! I will have better answer to question like why do you admire him so much than why do you hate him ? Now, I could feel it is the black community like this Blog feeds all this low-self esteem to their people. Why do you need to bother about the world when you are good in your own opinion ?

It is for 2 reasons:

1. Because europeans stumble upon an opportunity to target a certain group and they took advantage of it.

Through brutality and force they beat up on other races/ethnicities around the world, took their countries, and brainwashed them.

2. It makes the rich even richer by creating a distractions among the middle/working class of the world.

3. They are barbarians. Everyone in the world knows this. Don't worry about it black people. Do your thing. Everyone can see it. Don't be fooled.

4. It continues to work on the black person's psyche.

For example,
Steve Jobs just embarrassed himself in his iphone keynote but completely ignoring the African countries in his summation of the countries he has distributed his iphone to. It was blatantly obvious and completely brought down the mood of the "ceremony".

this old racist generation will die off and the more informed and globalized new younger generations will be taking over. who see the FOOLISHNESS and DEPRAVITY in going along with a bunch of uber-rich-slave-driver psychopaths who create color lines and attacks other's biology to keep the middle/working class stupid so they can stay rich.

the old tricks will ceased to work any longer.

RACISM is PRIMITIVE.

RACISTS are DINOSAURS.

for our disobedience. Being a Ysralite is not practicing a religion but our true nationality.

black people are not hated for their color, but how they are. most people who come to know a black people will realize that many are decent people like everyone else. but, because black population carries more inconsiderate, imposing, rude, ignorant people than other race or ethnicity, the likelihood of non-blacks encountering repulsive blacks are higher. thus, non-blacks are skeptical of blacks, and each black person who comes in contact with non-blacks for the first time must prove themselves to be otherwise. consequently, when a non-black encounters ignorant and inconsiderate non-black, they don't attribute that rudeness or incivility to the race or the ethnicity of that person. but, for blacks, because one encounters so many ignorant and inconsiderate blacks time and time again, non-blacks simply attribute such negative characteristics to being black. black people are disliked because they are irresponsible for their own kind. too many of them are dangerous, ignorant, rude, inconsiderate, and irresponsible. too many have no shame. and black people don't seem to be ashamed of the fact that so many of their kind is that way (if they were, they really do something about it; at least be apologetic. and non-blacks are tired of trying to figure out who is ok to deal with and who is not. so, do away with all unless one proves otherwise. blacks are hated because too many non-blacks are becoming victims of those dangerous, ignorant, irresponsible, inconsiderate blacks.

As for the so-called "Curse of Ham", a novice review of the Torah or the Book of Genesis will tell you a couple of very important things: 1)God exclusively blessed Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham and Yaphet (Japheth), 2)The offense was the disrespect of not covering his father's nakedness. In these days, this level of dishonor would have neither weight nor consequence, but in ancient times meer disrespect and dishonor were often grounds for execution or some form of punishment. Addressing a ruler or parent in the wrong way was dealt with very seriously. 3)It is written in the same scriptural account that Canaan, Ham's son was cursed and not Ham. Argue the logic or equity if you will, but deal with the report as is. 4)Rabbinical authors propagandized stories of Ham coming out of the Ark with a black face for an offense against God during the time of the flood. However, God blessed Ham when the flood was over. So, that lie doesn't was. The church movement that started almost 300 years after the doctrines of the original church in Jerusalem had begin latter adopted anti black sentiments. This includes the Catholic, Protestant and even many fundamentalist offsprings of those organizations.

The truth is that Canaan was the only one cursed. Africa was not populated by the Canaanites. It was the other 3 sons, Phut, Misraim and Cush which spread their lineage throughout the African Continent. The land of Canaan is where the children of Israel settled after bondage in Egypt. That's what the Torah and Book of Genesis (first book of the Torah and Bible) states.

So, you bigots are going to have to take personal responsibility for your hatred of dark skinned people and stop pretending to think that somehow there is a supernatural authority for your utterly base and baseless mindset.

The popularized hatred and mistrust of Black People is a great marketing tool. It make billions of dollars off of Black trying to look and live like other groups. It helps states receive federal funding for penal institutions and their expansion by over-incarcerating Blacks for offenses or alleged offenses that Whites are excused for. Not to mention the boon for the criminal defense business. Black men are increasingly being systematically erased from the portrait of America. Advertisers frame their commercials as if Black men don't even exist. Millions of Black women have drank that koolaid and are reeling drunk on it. Many non-blacks are convinced that a stray dog or cat in the street is worth more than the life of a Black man, while there men prize the trophy of getting their hands on a black woman.

This is not a protest of inter-racial relationships, but examples of how the lie of Black inferiority plays out in society.

Check the above listed assertions. Then, tell me about Supremacy. It's artificial.

It makes billions of dollars off of Blacks trying to look and live like other others. Many non-blacks are convinced that a stray dog or cat in the street is worth more than the life of a Black man, while their men prize the trophy of getting their hands on a black woman.

This is not a protest of inter-racial relationships, but examples of how the lie of Black inferiority plays out in society.

Check the above listed assertions. Then, tell me about Supremacy. It's artificial.

I am the son of a millionaire, the grandson of a poor hunter and guess what i am black. whatever the position is for the african man, it is our responsibility to rewrite the future of the black race.

Yeah, there is alot of negativity in the past, such as slavery, crimes etc. But we must understand that the past is irreparable and unchangeable. we either lay our negative past to rest or it may as well lay our future to rest.

like i said my grand dad was a poor hunter, my dad a multi millionaire. i see myself as the future- a billionaire

Very well said! This is quite an interesting blog and so many comments I would love to reply to but I would be degrading myself to a pulp :) I am better than that because I am educated and have common sense and not afraid of the truth. I KNOW myself and my history as well as the history of others…I did not just conclude my thoughts about an entire race due to the ignorance of the shallow minded, block headed fools that choose to either ignore the facts or do not even know what they are teaching is total jibberish. If you are so offended (intimidated is more like it) by the repulsive smell, by their crimes or just by the look of someone…why invade their land, steal from and bribe then, rape them and export them…why werent they left alone? Why are so many people trying to take over another mans land. Greed breeds hatred and ignorance and brings war. After stripping the people of their dignity, you teach your offspring to hate them and they have passed this on to many generations so much that it is the norm. People of all races commit crimes, infidelity, are illiterate, poor, rich, poor, ugly, have big noses, thick lips, thin lips, smell bad, smell good……lol but unfortunately due to the crime committed against the black race, they tend to pick us apart negatively from root to tip. It is like we are aliens from a strange land,an infinite science project, being poked and groped and ridiculed at any cost. The spend so much energy on these stinky, useless degenerates (as we have been called) but did you ever try to find out WHY? Please stop embarrassing yourself. Educate yourself or say nothing at all. BTW why dont they have the "barbarian race" on applications and surveys. I think it is begitting for most of you Ignoramuses. *pls excuse the typos and missing punctuations.. my Kobo is acting up & I am too tired to make corrections* Peace and love to ALL :)

I truly feel that Black people are hated is because God / Jesus was black, he's described this way in the Bible. Satan was a fallen angel that defied God. Satan felt that he was the most beautiful angel and more powerful than God; and defied God. Instead of God destroying Satan; Satan was given Hell as his own kingdom. During the time of Jesus Christ, Jesus was a black child/man which explains the resistance
by Jews (Whites) to accept him because he was different from them; with the exception of a small following of the population. Satan can't be a co-creator, because God is the only creator.
Satan concentrates on the the White population to do his bidding, because that is what he is hence White Supremacy. I'm not saying all Whites are evil, because they have free will like every human does. When thought of; Whites are responsible for the greatest crimes against humanity; such as the near extermination of the Native American population, Slavery of Africans, Attempted extermination Jews (Whites) and other crimes against Asians and other groups all over the world, as well as stealing, lying, exploiting, and murdering, in the name of greed, hate, pride, and conquest without remorse. I will have a White Supremist comment on my my post and he/she will prove my point.
