So a while back we had a heated debate on Asian women here. How they are viewed as the ideal minority here in America, and how it is perfectly acceptable in mainstream society for a white man to have an asian girlfriend or partner and no one blinks an eye to it.
Now I found this. Apparently in Japan this restaurant is all the rage. Asian women getting served by "Western"(i.e. white men). Apparently the owner of the place questioned what Asian women wanted, and they said "Western" men. Then stereotypes flew. Asian men apparently aren't capable of being gentlemen like Western men are. Apparently "Western" men are "smoother" and make them feel special more than Japanese men as well.
I wonder how well this will go over in America?

Gee sounds like a hard job ;) Having dated a Japanese girl seriously and had some as close friends, they did seem to have low opinions of their fellow Japanese men, who they described as controlling and too old fashioned.
I wonder if they hand out applications, or should I just forward my resume? ;P

I don't understand that, date who you want, but why not like those you claim to have no interest in and group them into a certain category.

I mean i always wondered why some Animes (japanese cartoons) the characters looked more western than japanese when the show was set in Japan?! :-S ( eg Sailor Moon-see wikipedia )

I see it like this, if many of these women feel they are so attracted to caucasion males, then GOOD for them! Let them date as many of them as they want. But stereotyping Asian men by calling names like nerdy and emasculate just to justify their reasons for dating white guys, is, to put it quite frankly, BULLSHIT! If anything it just shows that they've got issues with them or are dating outside their groups for the WRONG reasons.

Its those Masai men. With my little attraction to black men, I was in complete awe when I met my first maasai man. They are hypnotic. Seriously, There is nothing like it. And he liked me too but unfortunately it was never to be.

@ Boom: I read about the sex tourism a couple of months ago. I heard it was sold by tourism companies as a throwback to when blacks served whites. A young "mandingo" they can keep on a financial leash is a social status item.
I thought the whole thing was disturbing, not because of their age (most of the women seem to be at least 50-60 years old), but because many of them are preying on poor people and NOT USING CONDOMS. Sex kills everywhere these days.
I'm not picking on Africa or blaming the people that live there: there's no telling what kinds of friends for life tourists are sharing with people that can't or won't be able to afford to treat them.

I've always wondered why in anime everyone looks white. My husband has a fascination with Macross, and even the hispanic and black folks look almost white, but just with a tan. At least in the early 80s they crossed the color line with Roy Fokker and Claudia LaSalle

My mother in law refused to date or marry a Japanese man (she is Japanese) because she insists that Japanese men are all pompous, chauvinist pigs. So she married a Mexican man, which is ironic, given that the common complaint I've heard of Mexican men is that they are domineering, chauvinist pigs.
My father in law, by the way, is so gentle, soft spoken, and non aggressive, it is kind of insane. He looks white, though, so I'm sure when some people look at them, they just assume he's another middle aged white guy who married an Asian woman in order to oppress her.
And of course, the stereotype of Asian women is that they are quiet, subservient, and coy. Ha! Not only is my mother in law not that way in any way shape or form, but neither are any of her four sisters.
Stereotypes are ridiculous, but you can always find someone to fill them, I guess.

Not a bw ir blog. I am a bw and in IR, so I discuss it a lot. I also discuss race issues with other cultures if it strikes my fancy. I am not implying we need to emulate or follow in the footsteps of asians. I think this post was showing my disdain for the concept of this restaurant and how exclusionary it is to keep such a narrow view of "Westerner"
There are host clubs where Japanese business men can be served by non-Japanese women of multiple races. These hostesses get paid to talk mostly in English to Japanese men and get then to buy drinks.
