Toccara Jones-Normal Size Girls Get Their Due
Toccara is or was considered a plus size model, but now she is in the special "Black Issue" of Italian Vogue. It is nice to see a woman who isn't stick thin able to model in the big time.
She has a very "classic beauty" look to her. Very gorgeous. She reminds me of Sophia Loren. Back in the day, models could have thighs and boobs, now it seems shunned.
I might have to quit being feminist like and break down and buy this issue.
OMg, I love Tocarra. I see her as one of my role models. She's what a real woman looks like and IM happy to see her in a "high class" magazine such as Vogue. I've loved her since ANTM. I knew there was something special about that girl. Do your thing Ms. Jones.
Tocarra looks beautiful but I won't be purchasing the black issue or any issue of Vogue. I'm not into fashion and I think beauty/fashion magazines encourage low self esteem.
Tocarra is such a pretty girl. I hear that Italian Vogue issue is coming out next week in the US. She looks as though she lost some weight. I'll bet she doesn't look that big in person.
You are of average size, but in the modeling world, average size folks = fat. To be a "regular" runwy/fashion model you have to be a 2 or SMALLER. Us regular folks can't compete. Or if we do, we have to take speed and smoke cigarettes. That or have a bad case of bulimia.
Great site! I can't remember the path clicked that lead to you but glad I'm here. Never heard of Toccara until now. Thanks for the shared knowledge. Again, great site - i'll be back.
Tocarra is beautiful. Ayodele bought the magazine on Friday 11 July and I got another for a friend to send to Manchester. The pictures are stunning, but Toccarra is so beautiful.
To be honest, I think she should have been the first plus size model for ANTM. She's so much better looking than Whitney from this recent season. It's great to see that she's in Italian Vogue, which many of the regular sized contestants have gotten in This just shows that thin ain't always better!!!
If I remember properly, as far as the fashion world is concerned, a model wearing a size 8 is "plus-sized." For a very long time, the women modeling larger clothing were too small to wear what they were shilling. In recent years, this has changed somewhat, as has the idea that bigger clothes must always be mumus.
What's carried in the stores as "plus sizes" is usually at or past 14/16 (IE the jump from "misses' " to "womens' ". This varies from retailer to retailer because of sizing issues (vanity sizing and the fact that manufacturers aren't obligated to make clothes according the "standard" for each size--it's just a suggestion) and target audience (you can never be too rich or too thin, so you'll spend lots of money on small clothes if you are).
At the Levi's Store near my school, the largest size of jeans you can find on display is an 8. The store is located in an outdoor/open-air mall at the far end of town where the snooty and the loaded live. Many of the women I saw shopping there were in their 40s and wearing the same sizes/hairstyles/accessories as their 13-17 year old daughters. When I asked if they had anything larger in the back, I was told that they didn't carry anything larger than a 12 and usually only had 2-3 pairs of those at any one time; there wasn't a need to order them based on who was shopping there. ----
I'm glad Tocarra got a spread. At the same time, it's sad because it had to be somewhere else (Italy) which has always loved women with boobs and ass.....and is also a place where it's not uncommon for black women to be alternately showered with adoration or asked how much they cost.
I really enjoy the pictures of her face--it shows her beauty, especially in the ones they didn't PS in to boringness. I do think, however, that the photos play up her sexuality to a point that she's almost an object. I know the photographer is known for being edgy, but I find it interesting that many times it's black women being shot like that rather than others. I know she's got assets and I'm not suggesting they not be flaunted, but the composition of many of the pictures (dirty, dark) takes away from how classy she looks and maybe plays up us being less than (her pictures having an harsh/rough/industrial background rather than the pretty/refined/suburban ones other models tend to get for Vogue)?

Tocarra is beautiful! I met her a few weeks ago while she was working a shoot with a friend of mine. She has such a beautiful personality and spirit!

What constitutes plus size?
They usually range from size 10 to size 12 and if you are extra big 14. A size 14 is like having a 34 or 35 inch waist.
Hey! I didn't know that Pam Grier had a daughter!
She does look like Pam Grier!!!!

I plan to get my hands on this magazine ASAP, though I may have to make a trip to the big city to get it.

I have this issue and it is great. To bad I don't read Italian because I would love to read the articles on Tyra and Grace Jones.
If you live in NYC you can get a copy at the MagazineCafe on 37th Street b/t 5th and 6th Avenues
*thud*
