The Jeffersons was the 1st TV show in history to prominently feature an IR couple. In particular an IR couple between a white man and black woman. Note The Jeffersons was a spin off of All In The Family, where the main character, Archie Bunker was the atypical bigot, and the Jeffersons were their neighbors. George Jefferson was the black version of Archie Bunker, except he was rich, and black. He was able to "Move On Up" and away from the blue collar neighborhood the Bunkers lived in. George and Tom Willis were friends on the show, but only at the expense of Tom. George often referred to Tom and Helen as the "zebra" couple, and Tom as a "honky". Tom never seemed to strike back at George, Helen always had a short or baldy joke to slam back at George. Ironically, even though he refers to Tom and Helen's kids as "zebra" children, Lionel Jefferson and Jenny Willis get married.
I always found it funny that Jenny was played by a black actress and that their son, who was rarely if ever on the show, was played by white actors. Like there were no biracial actors available, of course on most predominantly black shows, they always have biracial actors and actresses playing black, and we never bat an eye to it (Half & Half, Girlfriends, The Cosby Show, My Wife & Kids, Fresh Prince of Bel Aire). Why don't they use these biracial and pass them off as white kids in white families on TV?
Anyway I felt it important to point them out, and to also point out, that even as a child being able to see some of these episodes in first run (shut up, I know I am old, I remember the early 80s pretty well), it never occurred to me an interracial relationship was possible, as that was just some made up stuff on television to me. I also remember being shocked they let them kiss each other on the lips, nothing passionate, just pecks, but still that was shocking.
Side note, I am so late on this, but Wilona from Good Times sang the theme song to The Jeffersons, and Lionel #1 (you know, not the dark skinned one) left the Jeffersons for a season or two to be a writer for Good Times. Who would have thunk? Also note, Ja'net DuBois is proof black don't crack, that woman has barely aged since 1976. How does that work?
Another side note, Roxie Roker who played Helen Willis, is the mother of Lenny Kravitz and cousin of Al Roker.

I didn't know Wilona sang the theme song for The Jeffersons!!! Nice little tidbit.
And yes, I used to wonder why Jenny wasn't played by a biracial actress.
Tom and Helen had a son?????
I don't think they had any biracial actors/actresses at the time to play the kids.
Also BernNadette Stanis (Thelma from Good Times) looks good for her age she certainly hasn't aged much.
Yeah the son was only in a few episodes, apparently he was a college drop out hippie traveling the world.
A very special episode that focused on Helen and Tom.
Wow, you could never get way with "zebra children" or honky now. It's fun to check out old shows and movies in the pre political correct era.
If interracial marriages were illegal till very shortly before the show, the likelyhood of a biracial actor would be greatly diminished.
But then again, it's TV/Hollywood, where all the indians I saw were white guys with wigs. I knew lots of Indians and none of them looked or dressed like on TV. I even knew what the Indians wore "back in the day" and it was not like they showed on TV. And once again, and I think we understood this back in the day, GI Joe and He-Man taught us the best way to avoid lasers and bullets was to do a summersault.
Accuracy in the media has gotten much better these days, as is displayed in "Save the Last Dance" and all those other movies we talked about.
Don't get it twisted, Bi-racial people have been here since the inception of this country. Hell, even before that, it is just they were called black. Many of those we mention as black people who made history are proof of this.

The Jeffersons and All in the Family were so brilliant. Can you imagine an interracial cast of any kind on the "Big Three" networks?
I remember an episode when Tom and Helen were fighting at the Jefferson's place. George and Louise were watching. Tom started saying to Helen, "you're such a...such a...." George whispers to Weasy something like, "i know what he's gonna say" and George shouted out "nigger!" And Tom lept to his feet to confront George and George gets in his boxing stance to fight him. It was so hilarious.
And I almost forgot, the brilliance of Bently's back problems and having George, a black man, literally walk all over him....TV was so good back then!!!

LOL...I see lots of eye batting at biracials (especially biracial girls and women) portraying black characters. And it's almost always black WOMEN batting eyes/complaining about it. It's the same bitter women complaining about the number of biracials or non-black women featured on rap music videos!

Why are the women bitter? Why do I think you got troll tendencies?
Does it not bother you that in the year 2008 colorism still exists within the black community?
That's right Tom and Helen did have a son and he totally seemed wrong for the part. The Jeffersons comes on TVLand sometimes and I recently saw one of the episodes with the son.
TV was good back then, truth is I kinda liked Archie Bunker, he was such a simple and silly man.
I didn't know Al Roker was related to Roxie Roker but I did know Roxie was Lenny's Mama.
As far as biracial folks, I agree with you, they have been here since forever its just that media only started mentioning them.
See I grew up watching the Jeffersons too. I didn't understand most of it but that was my image of black America. Hip Hop has really screwed this image.
