Does talking about race really help race relations? No..
It's interesting and sometimes educational but that's mostly the extent of it. I've had more than a few heated discussions over race on the net and at the end of the day, that person still believed what they believed and I believed what I believe. Race is right up there with religion and politics; it's not to be discussed in polite company, unless your looking for trouble.

It is interesting and educational. It gives me insight. Growing up I could never understand why white people always assumed most black people to be poor, especially when the blacks they knew lived right next door to them. Why they thought we were criminals or gang bangers. Why the assumption is we love hip hop or rap, or why some felt the need out of the blue to say "I don't notice race", when obviously they did or they wouldn't feel the need to comment.

When you challenge people's belief systems it is a personal affront to them, it offends them, but sometimes it needs to be done, even if it doesn't change their mind, they need to at least think on it. I find nothing wrong with talking about race. It is an ugly discussion, but it needs to be talked about. It needs to be out in the open, instead of behind closed doors.

LOL, you took the words right out of my mouth Siditty. I had an argument with a white female conservative that was so nerved about black people discussing race and thought they were racist for bringing it up. When we had a political debate during the election, she would call other blacks racist for calling her racist when clearly she has a problem with Blacks. The girl would say things like, "I'm tired of you guys always whining and not taking responsibility". "You guys always talking about not receiving reparations and wanting hand-outs". What killed me is that she believed that Barack Obama was elected president through affirmative action. Not only that but she accused me and another black young lady of having it easier because we get handouts from the government. I grew up middle class and so did she and we never had the benefits of receiving welfare and link cards lol. The more and more she talked the more she made it clear that she is racist and very stereotypical.

As for the "I don't see race" "I want a colorblind society" talk, I hate it. I don't think many blacks or minorities want a colorblind society. Most white conservatives, think in color is the reason for racism. It's beyond that, it's the logic behind race that gets people to become offensive.

If your white I wouldn't recommend talking about race very much; it could have have some very bad repercussions, even if you didn't think it was offensive. This goes double for any school, work, or formal social environment.

Good question.
My problem with the whole discussion on racism is that it is often simplified btn a black and white issue.

Racism is so systemized that the worst culprits today may not be white, atleast in California. The most racist things I hear from classmates come from non black minorities. And the worst discrimination comes from non black non white coworkers.
The White Supremist system gives non black minorities the power to discriminate and this they do. But you rarely hear of them being addressed. they quickly run for cover as minorities too when they are caught. In my experience I have found, Mexicans, Philipinos, Koreans to be the most racist. Chinese tend to be down to earth and Japanese even more so. Indians have a caste mentality and may by far be the most racist because it is part of their culture. I work with all these groups and you can easily pick up their attitudes.

People are always focused on white racism. With whites quickly becoming the minority, blacks will wake up about the other racism when its too late.

^Grata, I agree that non-white/black minorities can be quite racist. But I also find that black folk can be just as worse. I think this is b/c of the whole "I can't be racist b/c I'm black" way of thinking. Just the other day my "friend" was commenting on how this asian man couldn't drive b/c he's, well, asian.

It's so funny That you guys are talking about the exact thing me and a male coworker were talking about at work this morning. He really seemed to want to know my point of view on race and I his. I think if people of all races had open minds like this guy then race relations would not be such a big deal to talk about. I actually think talking about race can help better our society. I also know that opening up old wounds can cause more strife, but we need to face each other. I wish we could get beyond race and just see each other for our individual selves, but I know that that is just a dream.

THIS IS SIMONE.

Is it strange to race as merely a color continuum? We are all on the same continuum just different sides.

black (like 319 part black; 1 part white)

lighter black (200 part black; 119 part white)

.....

White (1 part black; 319 part white)

lol!

Further, Is it strange to think that there is something indicative about color both positives and negatives, but its up to truthful people to see both and accentuate the good.

The reason blacks say they can't be racist is because even if they are, they rarely are in a posistion to oppress their victims (except for the criminals ofcourse and these come in all shades).

Blacks are can discriminate and I have experienced alot of black bigotry because I am foreign. But racism has the extra dehumanizing element. If you take away someone's right to a living based on their skin color, that is pure racism. If you racially profile, that is racism. Non black minorities are getting away with this every day.
If some one thinks I am lesser than them or I am stupid because I am black, that I would consider a little less than racism merely bias, ignorance etc But if their feelings towards my race are acted out to get in the way of my well being then they are being down right racist and that is when the line has been crossed.
We all have sterotypes and prejudices towards certain group, the difference is in the application.

If an old man gets attracted to an under age girl and doesn't act on it and another one acts on it are they both pedophiles? One has the thoughts the other has the thoughts and the action. A line was crossed.
Blacks can claim not to be racist because as a minority in power and decision making in the work environment, they couldn't discriminate based on race even if they wanted too. And if they did they would most likely discriminate against another black than any other person. I have been a victim of black discrimination at the work place. And that is definitely not racism.

Your argument is exactly what other minorities use to justify their racism towards blacks. They calim, I was called this by a black person, they are racist too and then they rationalize their own racism. When black gangs attack Latinos, that is racism, when Latino gangs attack blacks, that is racism. Unfortunately in California, its the Latinos harrassing blacks. So again its seems other minority races are a step ahead in being racist but they attempt to rationalize it the way you are.

I got harrased 3 times by the same Indian security guy at a grocery store. Despite the fact that I wrote leters on the first two incidents to the manager. This guy would just see a black face and start harrassing. The Supervisor's defense was that he can't be racist because he is Indian. I had to contact his security firm and report him for harrassment.
So rationalizing your own racism won't do.

I'm just frustrated with mountains of grad school work!

I'm open to meeting any woman who I might click with. I haven't had much time to look recently, but I always have an eye out. There are practically no black people where I live now; so I'm not sure that the black guy friend will work, but I appreciate the advice.
