I was again over at Rippa's blog, when I saw this genius comment from this person.
I think every part of this country has something unique and fucked up about it. I live in Virginia now and what gets me is how muthfuckas act like the South won the fucking war. There is Civil War shit everywhere in Virginia. You go to Germany and you won't find them celebrating Adolph Hitler Day. But in Virginia, they celebrate Confederate Heroes! What's heroic about owning human beings like they were pets?
He is on point. Seriously, I live in Texas. Everyone is southern and proud, religious, and patriotic, except me. I am the weirdo. I am proud to be a southerner, but I don't rejoice in losing the Civil War or living in a confederate state. I am proud to be a southerner, don't get me wrong though.
"Texas is the home of the players and pimps
Showin naked ass in the great state of Texas
Third coast born, that mean we're Texas raised
Texas mother f&*@*$ that's where I stay!!!!"
Thank you Paul Wall and let me do my obligatory R.I.P. DJ Screw and Pimp C. Shout out to Swishahouse!!!!!!!! I have never showed naked ass in the great state of Texas though. I think I dated Paul Wall's twin at a dark time in my life. There is also a shout out to William's Chicken in the song. If you don't know about William's Chicken, it is the best, and I think it is law that you must have gold teeth in order to serve the chicken at this establishment. Nuff Said. I digress.
I love Texas, it is the only home I know. I know it is flawed, but it isn't all that bad. The KKK doesn't chase you down daily, nor is the n-word thrown at you all that often. I won't deny it hasn't happened though. Yes I know everyone except me is a republican, but even the republicans can be nice at times, we just don't bring up politics.
For some reason though many a Texan want to relive the good old days of the Confederacy. They want to wave their flags, put them on their trucks, they want to recreate the civil war, but with an alternate ending. They want to believe Sam Houston was indeed the President of the United States of America. But I think these folks forget the south lost the Civil War, Texas lost at the Alamo, and that the Yellow Rose of Texas was not a blonde haired white woman but a half black and half white woman.
Emily West Morgan aka the "Yellow Rose of Texas" was an "indentured servant" forced to serve a 99-year contract. Yeah she was a slave. A slave that per legend basically ratted out Santa Ana and the Mexican Army to protect her master. She was by all accounts fighting to keep herself in slavery for the sake of Texas' independence, who was fighting Mexico because Texans were mad they outlawed slavery. Her master was impressed and supposedly freed her, but there is no record of her getting freed. Ain't that some shit. Again, I digress. Yall know you wanted to know the history of Paul Wall, Williams Chicken, and Emily West Morgan.
Too many want to embrace the whole "Texican" culture, some of us believe we are our own country, and we just tolerate being part of the United States. Personally I put country before state, but that is just me, and I sure ain't taking the side of folks who would have me as slaves or who embraces segregation under the guise of "states rights". Call me crazy. We also like the idea of living in the Wild West doing our own thing. I like modern technology and I like being part of a cohesive unit. I sure as hell like having a black President. It is a nice change of pace. Still waiting to get a black governor in Texas, but that will never, ever happen. You see we got folks trying to secede mad because they got a black man running things, and we would have an assassination attempt if the governor of Texas was a black man. As you know, we all got guns down here. I think we would have to use a Dave Chappelle strategy if we get a black governor; he has to get a Mexican Lieutenant Governor so the threat of assassination is lowered.
Germany I am sure during Hitler's reign had something, maybe one thing positive going for it, but they don't have 3rd Reich month to celebrate these things do they? Per my husband's family, over there they act as if Hitler was a fictional character and doesn't exist. You don't say his name, just like Beetlejuice.
Do they have "Hiter Youth" reunions or holidays to celebrate and preserve German Heritage? Or Sturmabteilung and Schutzstaffel week?
In Germany is "Throw The Jew Down The Well" the unofficial song of the country?
I have to wonder being a black southerner, if my southern heritage goes beyond the civil war, why can't those who embrace the confederacy? The Civil War doesn't equate into my pride as a southerner. So why do those who embrace the confederacy not have pride beyond the war that represents slavery, murder, and loss? Why embrace a flag or symbol that represents oppression? Is that all white southern heritage has to offer? I sincerely hope not, and I don't think it does. Shouldn't we have Union Soldiers remembered as they were Americans and not people who fought to leave the union? How patriotic is that?

I hope what I'm about to say makes sense...
I think there are a faction of individuals who hate that they don't have a "cross to bear." Of course they don't literally hate it, but their actions suggest otherwise. I'm from TN, and that's a red state through and through if I ever saw one, and they LOVE them some Civil War, confederate flags, my family has lived in this county our whole lives type stuff -- and it's as if they hold on to that because it's a sticking point they have where they were "oppressed."
Look at how they frame it "My forefathers fought for their way of life" or "Everything was fine until the Northerners stuck their noses in it..." you know, this idea that everything would've been fine if they had been left to their own devices and I know that many Southerners (at least those in the great state of TN) still feel that way.
I think the next time I hear someone say something about "Why can't black people get over slavery?" I'm going to ask "Why white Southerners can't get over the Civil War"
Is it that time already?
I'm going to say this and don't be offended but I'm so glad I'm not from or have ever been to Texas or the south for that matter. It just seems to ignorant and backwards thinking. I love how they mock the northeast, if the south broke off into another country it would BE mexico, with a lot of poverty, a great amount of underdevelopment and some of the worst public education systems in the country. Maybe there is a reason why the top 5 states in public school ranking happen to be in the northeast. The weather might be nice down there but I wouldn't give up civilization to live among gun totting bigots and idiots in the backwoods.
Siditty, I'm from Virginia myself (no, not the northern region)and I see Confederate flags daily. To be perfectly honest, it doesn't bother me that much, it's just puzzling when people say that they wave that flag to "celebrate".
Celebrate what? Defeat?
Somebody didn't get the memo.
I did a post on the flag just week or so ago.http://dalynart.blogspot.com/2009/04/that-flag.html
I have spent my fair share of time in the south and think it has plenty to be proud of that has nothing to do with the Confederacy.
Especially living where I do now, I miss people having manners.
I miss good barbeque. I miss the word ya'll.
I don't miss Confederate Memorial Day.
I used to spend time in Charleston SC, which was one of the nations biggest and brightest cities during the revolution and offers some of the most historic homes and sites from colonial times... all the tour guides wear Rebel Grey.
I've been meaning to do a post for some time especially with that Black dude calling me a coon on that post. Yeah, a Black man who says though he's Black he's proud of the southern heritage and he himself is a member of the Sons of The Confederacy organization.
The closest I've ever come to witnessing this behavior was when I moved to Pensacola Fl. Lemme tell you, being 50 miles from the Alabama state line they didn't call that region FloraBama by accident. That mindset is still alive to this day. As a matter of fact, the state of Georgia just a couple weeks ago passed legislation to start celebrating Confederate History Month.
i honestly believe a certain segment of racist wp probably wouldnt' oppose slavery if they had the choice, they'd go back to "The good ole days," just like that...lol
Oh man! I can say so much to this post, but I'll try to keep it concise. believe it or not, this Nuyorican lived in Texas (mostly Houston).
I grew up of Puerto Rican descent within a black urban culture in NYC and it wasn't until I traveled extensively throughout the south that I saw how life was lived outside of Nueva York.
to wit: EVERYTHING is separated! I mean, I lived in a subdivision once where you could go for DAYS without seeing a black or brown face and that was culture shock for me. Plus the messakins don't like Nuyoricans cuz we have notoriety with the ladies (all lies! LOL!) and we are probably one of the most politically radical Latin?/a groups in the states.
I couldn't stand to hang with whites because, sweetie? when they think no one's around? they say shit that just don't sit well with me. so who did I hang out with Down south?
BLACK PEOPLE! LOL
all told, and outside of the lovely women of the south, my experience there wasn't too cool. I was too radical, too progressive and had too much of a big mouth to really fit it. Plus, people didn't have a freakin' clue as to WHAT I was: "blue-eyes, cussed you out in spanish and hung out with black people" was confusing to folks in Texas.
I will say this much: I did manage to get myself in a world of trouble but it was fun! LOL
First, let me just say LMAO @ "Thank you Paul Wall and let me do my obligatory R.I.P. DJ Screw and Pimp C. Shout out to Swishahouse!!!!!!!!" For some reason, that made my day.
Back to the point, I live in Georgia, and I find it to be the same way. Granted, Atlanta is heavily filled with African-Americans, many well to do African-Americans, but when you venture to the outside of that, it's a different story. Sad to say, but I feel as though many white, die hard southerners want to so badly think that the south won and that things could go back to the way they were. They will forever stay in denial and have a false ideology.
My best friend lived in Germany as a child and visited places like Nuremberg with her classmates (she went to an international school with other children who were expats like herself). She says they don't really talk about it because they're embarassed as hell. I mean, what country wants to talk about how they f-ed up big time 50 years ago every day? I wouldn't want that burden either. And they did outlaw most things like Neo-nazism, etc in an attempt to squash those types of issues.
@ Beautiful.Conjured.Up - I'm from Atlanta too (born and raised) and I agree...the mentality in Atlanta kind of sets it apart from the rest of GA. Although there's definitely some self segregation in Atl, not nearly to the same extent as the rest of GA. And the only time I see rebel flags, Confederate War re-enactments and other things proclaiming pride in Old Dixie is when I leave Atlanta. I'm proud to be a Southerner, with all the history, ups and downs that comes from Southern history, but that's something I could never get my head around, the clinging to the Confederate past....especially since the Confederacy had its racist (oh excuse me "states rights") ass handed to it on a silver platter.
Phi Sister is right...there's still a deep sense of collective shame in Germany about what the 3rd Reich did and the average citizen's role (or the complacency shown when atrocities were being carried out in the name of the people)....the only time the Germans talk about the 3rd Reich, Hitler or the Nazis is either in the context of history class or when unveiling a new memorial. If I'm not mistaken, all Nazi symbols are now illegal in Germany and have been for awhile...I don't even think it's legal to own a copy of Mein Kampf, let alone sell it.
LMAO @ the Paul Wall and Williams Chicken references! That pretty much made my day...I love Williams!
I must say that even though the South has its fools, It's home. I like Dallas, or now I do since I've been going to school in Illinois. Texas isn't that bad, and it can kind of slide by because it's not DEEP South, as opposed to Georgia, Bama, etc... Really, I'm just tired of ppl above the Mason-Dixon acting like the South is some foreign land full of assbackwards hicks, guns, and Confederate flags. Y'all got 'em too! Like the one commenter said, every place in the U.S. has a bit of bitchassness.
Damn... Texas is a hot mess.
NOT the lagest in population or land mass (California and Alaska).
But still, they like to brag about everything being "Bigger" here (looking at the women - maybe that part is true).
Juneteenth celebrates the freeing of the slaves - three years after the rest of the country.
"Remember the Alamo" - they lost
Conferderate flags - lost that too.
All they can really brag about is that UT beat USC - four years ago (still stuck in the past).
I live in Beaumont, Texas (which is really more like Western Louisiana) so the love for the Antebellum South is more common.
I'm from Mississippi. I attend the University of Mississippi aka Ole Miss. At football games, our band plays "Dixie" and up until a few years ago our official mascot was Colonel Rebel (a slave master looking character)and waved Confederate flags. I've seen plenty of Confederate flags on cars and flying on houses. For the life of me, I don't understand why they would want to celebrate getting their asses handed to them. I don't get all upset about it like I used to; nor do I think about it much anymore. The symbol has become as ubiquitous to me as stop signs.
"I'm just tired of ppl above the Mason-Dixon acting like the South is some foreign land full of assbackwards hicks, guns, and Confederate flags."
Story of my life. They act like we're a third-world country down here.
I'm a proud southerner, raised in SC. I think if blacks offered to march with the confederate flag with their white cousins, the white cousins would have a fit. Then we will all see what the flag means to them.
Siditty,
I've been to Germany and Germans don't want to be reminded of a crazed murderer who was allowed to ascend to power and leadership.
Had I not gone to Germany (at the encouragement of a friend who's family comes from Germany), I would not know for myself that Blacks lived in Germany as early as 1920.
In addition to turning the citizenry against Jews, the Nazi movement targeted what they called "Jungle Music as being detrimental to the culture of German youth.
Visiting the German Death Camp at Dauchau (outside Munich) I discovered that African Americans lived and entertained in Germany.
Dauchau is not celebrated by German nationals, it simply serves as a reminder of how cruel humans become when they follow the philosophy of the insane.
I can only believe that those (in America) who celebrate the Confederacy retain the intellectual capacity of those Europeans who thought the world was flat.
I admit I don't understand the logic because it defies the rules and laws of logical thinking. So then it must be an emotionally charged position they must hold on to. But Why? Could it be that in spite of all the evidence and information available, they cling to the belief that they remain superior?
It is a feeble attempt by a feeble mind to remain relevant. It's quite sad to be honest that a person has nothing of value in life to cling to except a lie.
U
I'm from Fort Worth, Texas and I hated it when I was there but now that I go to school in Seattle, WA I miss it more than ever! I always thought that I wanted to live as far away from Texas (or any part of the south) as I could when I graduated, but now that I'm in my first year of college I realize how much I miss it. Everyone is friendlier and not so snooty!
I definetley get annoyed by the whole "the south will rise again!" ideas that are still alive. "My high school mascot was "Johnny Rebel" a confederate soldier, our school flag was a moderated version of the confederate flag (the real thing was banned only a few years earlier), and our fight song for a while was "I wish I was in Dixie".
Even though Texas has all those negative southern characteristics, I'm still very proud to be a southerner and a Texan.I'm sure my friends get irritated by how much I flaunt that I'm from Texas!! Although Seattle is a beautiful, open minded city it often gives off a liberal elitist vibe that can be annoying.
Also....Ima have to download that Paul Wall song that great! and there is a Williams Chicken by my house at home I've never been but Ima have to check it out now.
Nuff Said. I digress. Can you actually understand anything Paul Wall says?? I saw a clip of him with his Baby and I felt so sorry for that little boy. I'd heard he made some platinum grills for him. Now that's child abuse. Here in some parts of Atlanta, it seems like the people here serving chicken are toothless, so gold teeth is a step up. Southern Discomfort is what I call it. White Southerners are so insecure about their "place" in society, they have to invent something to be proud of. It's pathetic, really.
