Even As First Lady, A Black Woman Can't Catch A Break

Thanks Acting Drama for the video.

Rusty DePass is a GOP activist with a facebook page. Someone left a comment about an escaped gorilla at a zoo. His response:

"I'm sure it's just one of Michelle's ancestors - probably harmless."

Yes he did. He compared the First Lady of the United States to a gorilla. A GORILLA. You know you can't compare black people to primates. That is some harsh stuff there. That feeds into the belief that many a white held for years that black people really aren't human, but closer to being an animal. My great uncle once told me that while he was fighting in Korea, the Korean people would ask the black military men if they had tails. They really thought they were monkeys. I am still in awe about that. How dumb and ignorant must one be to ask that question?

I know this man has to know black people are no more direct descendants to monkeys or gorilla than any other race of people, but oh, well I guess he doesn't give a damn. Macon D over at his blog has a great post about white people comparing black folks to monkeys and apes. It is a bit sad, but it is a great post.

What is even more shocking is that this man has apologized, but only half assed, after all it is Michelle's fault for him making the comparison:

"The comment was hers, not mine"

I am trying to figure out where Michelle ever said she was related to Bubbles the monkey or Koko the gorilla. Oh wait, I CAN'T!!!!!!!! Maybe she took a stance on evolution, but I don't think she ever said she, herself was a direct descendant of a gorilla.

Again we blame the victim. It is a great tactic used by many a racist, why stop now. Again a black woman is insulted and degraded, and people are shrugging it off as if it is her fault. Michelle is being treated as other, as if she is too animalistic to even be respected as a woman, much less a First Lady.

It simply amazes me in "post racial" America, we have people comparing their President, as well as First Lady to monkeys and gorillas. It scares me that this isn't even the first time it happened. Remember this:

Post racial America my ass.

I love your blog-I read it everyday! I usually don't comment on post but I had to comment on this one. Especially after reading about your uncle who fought in Korea.
I am living in Korea now teaching ESL and a few weeks ago I was at a snack counter and a group of high school boys started making monkey sounds at me. One even told me to "go home". All I could think about was how fucked up it was that I came halfway around the world to be called a monkey at a lunch counter in this "post racial"(insert sarcastic smirk here) year of 2009. I was so shocked by the irony of it all that I couldn't even get angry.
It's good to know that no matter what we accomplish (Mrs. O graduated Ivy for Christsakes!) or where we go, many will still see us as primates.

White people are some of the most if not the most ignorant beings on the planet. They spew this shit out so much that they really do believe it and then turn around and think they are superior than everyone else because they are WHITE. No race relations will always be fucked up between white and black people because of white people. THis is the shit that can make you hate their dumbasses. I have to keep in mind though that there are alot of white people who are not this ignorant and stupid. I have to keep that in mind.

I mean this all but proves that black women are less than; had the same comment been made about President Obama I think there would be a bigger uproar. There's just no concern for black women in this country and that is so disheartening.

I hate the whole "go home" rhetoric too. Why don't other groups go home. Like back to Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc. I've never been to Africa, but yet that is "my home"? Why is that?

You are so nice, I wouldn't have been so nice to the guys making monkey sounds, I would have beat them down. OK I wouldn't, but I would want to.

Exactly. I am blowing off the "black women are masculine" vibes when folks talk about Michelle's arms, but honestly the monkey thing is way too far.

Exactly. It always surfaces, but instead of people facing it head on, they shrug it off and sweep it under the rug. Race relations can't improve if this is the reaction.

To be fair it comes from both sides. I have my own moments myself after watching "Roots" or seeing crap like this, but I can't assume this is all white people, and I know at least some know why this statement is wrong.

That is the saddest thing that even with a black president and black first lady, it is still painfully obvious that as a person of color, you are still considered "less than".

I just saw this story and came over here. Mhen, I wonder what more is in store over the next 4-8yrs. I take incidents like these as a reminder that no matter what, Black people are perceived a certain way not by just whites but everyone else. And yeah, you will have all those people saying not all are like that but we know the truth.

These incidents remind us of our intended place in humanity. Blacks seem not to fully get it. I find Black people overly optimistic. Yes there is good in giving people the benefit of doubt, but the system as it is set out here is actually designed to destroy the Black person. Individual whites can claim not being prejudiced and they may very well not be but the system is bigger than them. Its in place and it is on the roll inching its way over the black person daily. You see it every where, its active, its has a life of its own. You see it when you go shopping, when cops slow down their cars to take a look at you, when people cross roads, when you are denied decent housing, employment etc. These are not things of the past they are here with us and will be around for a long time. Today its just taking longer to achieve complete destruction but the process in non the less still going on.

I take incidents and comments like this as the psychology of this system. The "rare" individual vocalizes the intentions of the machinery.

Comments like this should never be taken lightly unless ofcourse society wishes for their aim to be achieved.
And its clear that the BW is not priority here. There would be more uproar if it was directed at the President.

All black people in America seem to be on this path to hell but the BW seems to be closer to that destination.

Anonymous said...

Classical 1 was right. Black and White people will never come to terms. Ever.

There is this common plee from people, "not all of us are like that". The same defense given by Black Male apologists. 'Not all black men are like that'.
But where are all these good people to defend the dignity of the person under attack ?
The Mayor in this case did good. The Mayor, a white Southern Male. Where is Al Shapton and Co. ?

Evil can only be defeated when well meaning members of the dominant group stand up against it. The evil being perpetrated against the BW by BM is seeing no resistance at all. The evil we call racism gets more resistance from well meaning whites than Black misogyny.

But all in all the evil against the BW is receiving very little resistance from neither well meaning Black men or whites.

I LOVE how DePass blamed Michelle Obama and said that SHE was the one who first said the comment that we all came from primates. Even if she did say this (there hasn't been any evidence yet), this man knows the negative history of black people being compared to apes. He knew exatly what he was doing. But he was probably thinking, "Oh, well, it's on Facebook. No one will ever see it." Wrong. Sometimes, it seems as though being a conservative and being racist goes hand in hand.

And the man who's running against him? He's only ashamed of DePass's comments because it makes his city look bad. He would not have been outraged otherwise. Sometimes, I wonder if it's okay to bash black women. The next time a white woman is bashed publicly (does this happen much?), I'll look out for the media's reaction.

In my brief experience on this planet, many white women in America are very quick to say that Affirmative Action has never helped them in any way, shape, or form even if they have reaped benefits from that policy.

I wonder if it is a way of perpetuating the oppression that galvanized their feminist movements?

If they rail about being denied by AA, it would put them on more equal footing with white males in the outrage department.

It would also allow them to continue excluding women from the "mainstream" feminism movement under the premise of banding together against the "inadequate" hordes of not-so-pale people that are taking what is "theirs."

This is a very good point. Bush only made it through college because of nepotism. At least with affirmative action the person is at least not a complete dumbass, unlike with nepotism, the only requirement is being born--and that wasn't even the person's choice/idea. White women definetly benefit more from affirmative action than anyone else, think of all the scholarships specifically made for women (though they aren't race specific, there are of course more white women in America than other races, so percentage wise, they'd benefit more).

The "GOP = racist conservative white men" idea will never change w little incidents like this, it's just expected that they'll say something stupid to piss off minorities and therefor alienate them.

I heard it was the white soldiers who were going around spreading the tail/monkey stories to the locals -- especially in European countries. They were hoping to keep blacks as segregated, feared & hated as they were when back in the States; they especially wanted to keep them away from the European women.

Anonymous said...

yeah during WWII the tail theory was spread in the south pacific too to get the samoan women to avoid black soldiers, but it didn't really work. they ended up equally appreciating both the black and white soldiers. As long as they're not physically hurting me, i'm too tired to give a damn...i know i'm not a monkey, deep inside they know i'm not a monkey too so whatever.

The biggest lie is that WHITE WOMEN are a protected class under Affirmative Action. No white woman got into any school based on affirmative action...ever. I don't know about Bush but Clinton fineshed top of her class. Only blacks and some Hispanics are protected under AA. Michelle Obama is also a child of privilege.
In a interview with Newsweek, Obama reveals that she got into Princeton University not on the strength of her grades, which she admits were unexceptional, but thanks to her brother Craig, a star athlete and gifted student who preceded her to the school. As a “legacy” candidate and a beneficiary of affirmative action, Michelle Obama was granted an opportunity that others more accomplished were denied. Nor, according to friends quoted in the article, did Obama object when she was later accepted to Harvard as part of the school’s outreach to minority students. “She recognized that she had been privileged by affirmative action and she was very comfortable with that,” her friend recalls. Here is the link to the article, http://www.newsweek.com/id/112849/page/7

The troll must be a woman. Only blacks are protected under AA? This is the biggest joke ever. You are delusional as well as uneducated.

From the EEOC:

"Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects individuals against employment discrimination on the basis of sex as well as race, color, national origin, and religion. Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations, as well as to the federal government.

It is unlawful to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of his/her sex in regard to hiring, termination, promotion, compensation, job training, or any other term, condition, or privilege of employment. Title VII also prohibits employment decisions based on stereotypes and assumptions about abilities, traits, or the performance of individuals on the basis of sex. Title VII prohibits both intentional discrimination and neutral job policies that disproportionately exclude individuals on the basis of sex and that are not job related."

Last time I checked, the gender that was being protected was women, not men. So right now the biggest lie I see is YOU. White women would be a protected class. Of course, again you are either too ignorant or too uneducated to know such things, which is why racism continues to this day.

Another thing to consider, the EQUAL PAY ACT OF 1963 and

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Qualified people of color have been excluded for generations. That is the point of Affirmative Action, to help qualified people get a chance.

I'm guessing none of us were on the admissions panel but maybe she got in both because she was qualified and because of Affirmative action?

Either way, she only graduated because of qualification/merit.

This is from the African American Policy Forum http://aapf.org/focus/episodes/oct30.php

"Women benefit tremendously, and white women are the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action programs:
According to the United States Labor Department, the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action are white women ("Reverse Discrimination," 1995). The Department of Labor estimated that 6 million women workers are in higher occupational classifications today than they would have been without affirmative action policies.

Gender based affirmative action policies that benefit women run the gamut from science camps for girls to policies at the University of Michigan that promote the enrollment of women in engineering programs to breast cancer screenings and women-only domestic violence shelters.

Outreach, recruitment, and scholarships for women ecourage participation in fields like medicine, science, computers and engineering,fields in which they are seriously underrepresented

Government outreach programs ensure that women and minority owned businesses have a fair chance to secure government contracts.
Studies show that affirmative action has brought about significant benefit to women. For example, Between 1972 and 1993:

The percentage of women architects increased from 3% to nearly 19% of the total;
The percentage of women doctors more than doubled from 10% to 22% of all doctors;
The percentage of women lawyers grew from 4% to 23% of the national total;
The percentage of female engineers went from less than 1% to nearly 9%;
The percentage of female chemists grew from 10% to 30% of all chemists; and,
The percentage of female college faculty went from 28% to 42% of all faculty. "

So I don't give a damn about your stats. They don't mean shit to me. All I know is blacks have had to fight for the basics. You I am sure if you are white have not. You could never understand that. So arguing with me about stats does not mean jackshit. what has been unfair to people of color is what I care about no amount of statisitics will ever make me feel any differently. If color wasn;t such a big deal in this country we would not be having this discussion now would we? It's too damn bad that people are sitting around all pissed about blacks getting opportunities because of a law that should have never had to be passed in the first place. Don't blame people of color, blame the ignorant people who lack color who felt we were not worth being considered full human beings. Exactly. The same thing happened when black soldiers were stationed in the Pacific Islands (Samoa) during World War ll. White soldiers were angry that they had to be stationed alongside black men and were also jealous that the native Samoan women were attracted to the black soldiers there so they told Samoans that black soldiers had tails. After that, whenever Samoan women danced with black men they would reach behind their backs to check if they had a tail. Crazy, huh?

Sorry I am late to the party, my computer is fried.

Anyways, thats was the whole point behind the development of the evelution theory was to present blacks as a subhuman species. It has since been used to rob you of your religous rights, but thats another subject for another day.

Uh, hello,?! What do you expect from a man who resides in South Carolina, last I heard most whites down there still think they won the civil war and what's even more ridiculous is that they think they will "rise again", people like him need prayer and frequent reality checks lets hope he gets both and soon.

@Casper: Darwin's theories about common descent, adaptation, and variation, collectively referred to as evolution, were not presented to show blacks or anyone else as "subhuman." If anything, his work in The Descent of Man said that phenotypic differences in groups were simply variation. The closest he came to saying anything about anyone being "sub-" was that the difference in human physical appearance was the result of us all being subspecies of the same human group.

It's like the subspecies of tigers (Siberian, Bengal, Sumatran, Malayan, Indochinese, South China, Balinese, Javan): they're all tigers, they just live in different places and their coloring and size might vary in comparison to each other. Darwin also thought that all religions should be equally valid, so I'm not sure what evolution has to do with a decrease in religious rights.

Racialists, like Agassiz, de Gobineau, and (to an extent) Galton for example, used this work to try to "scientifically" justify the proliferation of whites (read: Nordics, Anglo-Saxons) around the world as nature at work rather than a combination of luck, technology, and disease. Their identities were largely predicated on the superiority of people that looked like themselves, so anything saying otherwise had to be disproven. There is a large body of this "work" because there were few, if any, people in a position to challenge these assertions because they were excluded from the scientific community. It also made people of "Nordic" or "Anglo-Saxon" descent feel better about their ability to remain superior to the unwashed masses of Irish, Southern, and Eastern Europeans immigrating to America en masse.

Agassiz, in particular, took Darwin's work and the work of evolutionists at the time as a personal attack. He, along with his wife and William James (one of the American pragmatists) went to Brazil; there, Agassiz hoped to prove that blacks and whites could not interbreed. They looked everywhere for hierarchy, even stripping down a servant girl and concluding that she was useful because she "[seemed] to have the intelligence of the Indian with the greater pliability of the negro" (Menand, p. 135). Mrs. Agassiz dismissed blacks being similar in intelligence to the Portuguese in Brazil as the result of the Portuguese being "a less energetic and powerful race than the Anglo-Saxon" (p.135).

Needless to say, Agassiz eventually went home empty-handed, but spun his results to show that he had neither been proven nor disproven, so he was still right.

There are people who still advance the separate origins theory (IE all races were created separately, "evolve" separately, and one is superior to all others), but this has nothing to do with evolution or Darwin.

DC,

Don't you just love how these "scientists" keep running around in circles and recycling this particular "theory" and still never come to a real conclusion.

In 1995, only 1,764 black students nationwide (1.7 percent of all blacks who took the test) scored as high as 600 on the verbal SATs; the math scores were even worse. By comparison, 64,950 white students (9.6 percent of all whites who took the test) scored 600 or higher on the verbal SATs. But under affirmative-action guidelines, those black students have been recruited by Berkeley, Harvard and similar elite schools, where the average white student (and the average Asian) had scores at least 100 points higher. At Berkeley, the gap is nearly 300 points. Predictably, blacks drop out of Berkeley at nearly three times the rate of whites.

This is but one of the unspoken nightmares of affirmative action. Simply put, African-Americans are being put in college programs that far exceed their abilities and qualifications.

Site your source? I bet you can't.

Let us also look at numbers here. We make up how much of the American population? How many of us actually took the test in comparison to white students. Where are those numbers?

Don't quote information from Stormfront and expect me to believe. I was one of those kids who scored better than the majority of the white kids on my college campus. Not all us negroes are dumb like you think.

Those numbers looked familiar those are from the famed "former liberal" turned neo conservative David Horowitz.

He once labeled a Muslim student association at UC Santa Barbara as a radical political group with ties to Al Queda and Hamas and was trying to bring jihad to higher education.He also makes claims of professors brainwashing students on college campuses, and infamously is unable to prove his stories of liberal indoctrination.

He also blames slavery on black people. He also likes receiving funding from the Bradley Foundation and has a propensity to have "racialists" like Jared Taylor (a white nationalist)to write for his publications. He also believes racialism is a direct result of multiculturalism.

Again please give me some REAL numbers. Provide me some real sources of info.

How do you know that you scored better than the majority of the white kids on your college campus? I didn't say all blk people scored poorly on Sat's. I did provide you real sources of info, you're just in denial. As far Horowitz goes, he is right about college campuses. He never blamed blk people for slavery. He has all types of people right for him. There isn't anything wrong with having Jared Taylor write for you. Everybody is entitled to there opinion. Jared isn't a racist, he is just against the far left trying to dehumanize whites. I will give you more examples of SAT scores in the future.

LOL! This is was your overall point all along. AAs are too dumband should be no where near institutions of higher learning. LOL! you are in for a life time of disappointment. Keep dreaming of Black intellectual inferiority.

@Grata:

What's that line from "Pulp Fiction"? The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence?

@Anonymous on 6/19 @ 7 AM:

The far left, more often than not, is white. Whites are dehumanizing each other? In what way?

If you mean that they want to be honest about the ramifications of colonialism, the social construct of race, white privilege, and people being wrong...how is that dehumanizing?

The moment you find out you're not always right or perfect is often the most humanizing experience a person can have.

"Simply put, African-Americans are being put in college programs that far exceed their abilities and qualifications"

My college (and several others) came to me because of my test scores and grades; I accepted. I wasn't chosen by a talking sorting hat, so I wasn't "put" anywhere in a program.

I guess this is why the advisor for my Graduate School keeps telling me to remember that "grad school is hard"?

Something about my lowly black self from a totally different/unrelated field of study academically outdoing all the "qualified and able" white people that came up through the program's undergrad system just rubs them the wrong way. LULZ.
