For those who don't know, it is a term for the person who cleans and maintains a boat. Usually used for a "blue collar" type person who sails or yachts. It is an OLD, ANTIQUATED, old %$& term that people who yacht or sail use. Now who sails and yachts the most? White men, and you know a lot of us black folks can't swim. We don't boat a lot. Unless we are T-Pain or Jay Z and UGK (R.I.P. Pimp C).
The old crusty ^%* mother ^%#(_&^ who use this term to this day, in the mother ^*(%#^% year 2009, should know better, but there dumb &$@($ don't know any better. Let me explain it to these dumb $@# morons. You would think referring to himself as a damn polymath, he might schooled on such issues, but let me address his dumb %$& in more than 140 characters, lest he is too damn dumb to comprehend an abridged tweet.
OK The term nigger is offensive, yes some dumb %&( black folks use it, but it still doesn't make it ok. So don't use the ^#$%@(*^$(@^% term you dumb ^*( bitch.
Being that the term is associated for one that cleans and maintains the boat, or for people who are "blue collar" indicates to me that you associate "niggers" with those whose sole purpose is to clean up and take care of your crusty white %&(. Again, go #%&* yourself.
Obviously white liberal guilt does not extend to this punk %$#&*. I was not aware there was a liberal chapter of the KKK. I bet as a kid he went nigger knocking, used a nigger knife, and pulled up nigger weeds.
Honestly this is the year 2009, figure out why the hell "boatnigger" might be deemed offensive.
Maybe I am being harsh, but I don't have patience for racist folks who feel they are innocent in using offensive terms. Nigger isn't a word I enjoy using, nor hearing. I have heard it enough in my life, and I sure as hell don't want folks like him downplaying the stupidity.

I've discovered that folks will say many things in the virtual world that they would never say to my face. I've had people write comments on my blog that initiate a What the fuck? response from me.
I tell myself, "It's 2009"; but I realize some folks will not change.
I remind myself of an incident when I moved from Chicago to Austin (Texas) and a White man called me a "coon". I had been called many things in Chicago but never a coon. Part of me regrets what I did to that man, the other part says, "Payback motherfucker!"
I have had to stop hearing and believing the lies spoken by ignorant folk. The truth is that no matter what anyone says about me or my race, if it has any demeaning content, then to me it is a lie; I will not believe it. I grew up in on of those rare conservative towns in Virginia where blacks and whites not only worked together but, we socialized with each other after hours, dated, married, had interracial slumber parties, etc... I never, EVER had any racism thrown my way until I went to (uber blue state) California and (uber blue state) Massachusetts. 90% of ALL White liberals I'VE MET are paternalistic, condescending jerk offs and they are mostly excluded from my social circle because of this. If you are black and they cannot feel sorry for you, superior to you or look at you in a paternalistic way, they want nothing to do with you and in fact, they will go out of their way to exclude you. Give me a room, town, work space full of MODERATE white conservatives anytime. This 'person' you're writing about uses the word 'nigger' because he can hide behind his 'liberal credentials'-see former klansman cum Senator Robert Byrd for example. It's nice to see black people FINALLY being disabused of the notion that only conservatives can be racist because I've encountered far more racist crap from liberals. And their form of racism is much more insidious therefore dangerous.

I couldn't agree more with this! After awhile, we as a people must stop letting all of that negativity in. Internalizing someone else's ignorance and hatred is counter-productive. And yes sometimes it is easier said than done, but letting alla that ish roll off the back like a duck, is oh so necessary.

You lived in a whole different area of the world. I grew up in conservative texas, six miles from a sundown town and mostly in towns and neighborhoods in which my family was the only black one. My experiences with republicans and conservatives have not been positive. They tended to justify racism, and sometimes explicitly displayed racism and then got mad and used the "political correctness" card when they told a funny n*gger joke to my face or had the audacity to say "You're not like the others" So this whole socializing together and slumber partying together didn't happen, and when it did I was the only person of color there. I was the diversity in the neighborhoods I grew up in, and I was constantly reminded of it. It wasn't a happy human race love going on. That or they pretended the racism they saw within themselves or their family didn't happen, which is why I exclude most conservatives and republicans from my social circle, which is hard to do in Texas.
PS I am well aware of the history of republicans and democrats and their relationships with blacks in this country, which is why I am a democrat. The republican party is no longer the party of Lincoln. I have blogged about it many a time.
while i see how the word can be taken offensively, i DON'T see why you'd let it get to you. words have only the power we give them. for instance, did all that cursing you used in your post really sound as bad as you felt? or was it just another way of expressing yourself... a really pissed-off way of expressing yourself.
people have called me kike now and again, but by shrugging it off or throwing racial slurs back in their faces, i find they lose interest in the word(s) because it's no longer taboo or forbidden. my complete disinterest works a lot better than getting angry about it. and often, i find that the people who use the words really aren't that bad. they're just plain folks - don't know any better.
maybe the guy is a racist, or maybe he has a different sense of humor than you. (doesn't mean you have to like it - just saying.) maybe this is just a slippery slope of mine, but if we stop using words because they have a bad history, pretty soon we'll have no words left at all. political correctness stifles language, and sometimes outright strangles it.

WTF, black is an acceptable term. I'm African-American and I use the term black and as far as I know 99.9% of African-Americans alternatively refer to themselves as black or African-American with no negativity. Plus, even if you were black yourself and using the word, it would still be uncool with a lot of people and as a white person. That word has more power than you will ever know. It isn't just a word. There is a heritage and legacy to that word that has impacted black people since we have been here in America. The negative association that word has goes beyond just a simple word.

Spring semester, 2008. I am a professor in a small group communication class. I have 15 to 18 students. The Imus congtroversy is swirling; and, I mention it only once, in a class of one black student, and myself. I am aware that the white and hispanic students find the entire episode amusing, and maybe even are irritated that I take a passive-aggressive stand on it.
Last day of class, I ask students for their email addresses so that I can email them their final grades. I get several standard email 'addies' and then, one white male student gives me this, while smirking: my email is musicnigger@yahoo.com. He says this to my face. I am insulted beyond.... I drop his 'A' grade to a 'C-', as I have stated in my syllabus that any disrespect to the professor or other students would impact your grade. He goes to student affairs, I am asked to change his grade to what he thought he was receiving. I say no. I am an adjunct, and my contract is not renewed for the fall.

You obviously didn't read the post. If you had, you would know I really don't hate white liberals. I found it offensive this one "white liberal" did not understand why the term boatnigger was offensive in the year 2009. I find it sad.
You are right, I am racist, but unlike most folks I question my own racism and don't get upset when I am called so, because I know most people are and as long as I look at my prejudices and examine them, I know for a fact I can improve myself and at least I attempt to fix my flaw instead of deny it.
