In post racial America we are again taught how truly equal everyone is. The The Creative Steps Day Camp paid the Valley Club for access to it's pool. They went to access this pool, only being told to leave because the membership to the club does not allow black people per the camp. The manager of the club said the quote above. Apparently they were worried about the "complexion" of the campers changing the atmosphere of the club.
Also note, this was not in the south, as there is a stereotype that we in the south are somehow more racist than our northern counterparts, but this was in Philadelphia. It doesn't matter where you live in this country, racism it seems cannot be avoided.

Ditto what Mimi said. I've been desensitized to racist bullshit because it seems to never end. In my mind everyone is racist until proven innocent.
What? But I thought we were all post racial now. And in a northern, democratic city at that!
We had an 8 year old kid on our block (I love kids who tell everyone's business) tell us his mom didn't let him swim in our local pool because there were too many black people in it.
He cluelessly told told this to my wife who calmly asked the kid what he thought about that. He replied he thought that was dumb.
We love Philly but wanted to move that day.
It's just really frustrating that the children had to go through this...that's what pisses me off.
we got white only clubs, the state i'm in was a slave state, we recently had an issue with some nooses being hung from a tree at a college...we had another issue a few years ago with a little bm doll being hung from a post with a noose around his neck at a frat party because people thought it be funny and i had someone threaten to lynch someone at my high school...and guess what i aint even in the deep south, i'm barely in the south at all. so i don't buy the whole the north is less racist, no they're just more subtle about it lol...

I just called the number to the club. I was going to leave a nice little message. The voice mail box is full.I am going to call the NAACP. I deal with racism from time to time and usually let it go. This time I will not. I just want to raise a little hell. I see people are still teaching their children intolerance and hatred. Fine okay, just as long as when someone discriminates against them for absolutely any reason, they don't scream how unfair it is. The greeting for the club had the nerve to say they had all kinds of options for EVERYONE. Really? I cannot wait to curse that
ass out.

That's a lawsuit right there. Sue their asses for breach of contract and discrimination. It's a damn shame that these kids should be punished for their skin color. Al and Jesse better not take to the streets, take it to court and get your paper. A lawsuit is all it takes to clear up this mess.

truth be told, them kids would probably go there and tear them people shiz up. Dont act like we are angels. I live in a nice middle class neighborhood. Recently, after my white, next door neighbors foreclosure, somebody else, white, bought the property. He in turn rented it to some blacks under section 8. Changed the whole complexion of the area. Their friend come over, music blaring, the spark up b-ball games, 12 am in the morn. Wont cut grass, or pick up trash. Sometimes, racism is not the root, its wanting to protect what you know is normal and your investment. I am from the Stuy, I know black people. But I also spent 150K on a house, in a mixed hood. Truth be told, I dont want MORE blacks. I understand the folks at the pool.
On another note, what made us different back in the civil rights days, was that, we just wanted to be treated equally. But we were good people then. We should be telling our kids to behave and people might be a lil more receptive of them. Bad enough they are teachers and other professionals that have to put up with them ill-mannered bastards, now you are invading their private place, during their breaks from that. I wouldnt want them there either.
Buy your own pools. Then you can yell, scream "@#$%!" all day, and be destructive at your own expense

this reminds me of when my grandpa and dad (back when my dad was my age) couldn't go to a fancy country-club pool in upstate NY near where they were living, because the sign said, "no dogs or jews allowed."
i always wondered, why are jews listed after dogs?
anyways, judging from the media-attention focusing on this place, they won't last long.

I hate to be the one to say this but, the children were going to experience racism at some point in their life. Why not now? Yes I know that is pessimistic but, none of us are as ready for a post racial America as we say we are. All of us hold onto too much hurt, myself included.
Is the club claiming that because it is privately run it can do whatever it wants? I guess there are private clubs which are exclusive. There are still some all-male clubs out there which women cannot join, so I'm not surprised that a swim club would exclude Blacks.
Embarrassing them into the 21st century is the only option - I don't know if you can really sue a private club for its policies. I don't know whether the legal system can force people to mix with each other in private clubs.
Interested in seeing if the club will change its stupid ways given all this unwelcome publicity.

There's something wrong with you when you're blaming the kids (who did absolutely nothing wrong) that got turned away by asshats for no other reason then their color. You don't even know if these kids have bad manners. You, like so many other idiots make assumptions. Grow up.
If all those rich black folk that throw money into charity actually used this money to build facilities for Children in Black Neighborhoods, they wouldn't have to experience this nonsense.
These people just got caught. Many predominantly white institutions feel the exact same way. Restaurants are notorious for this.
Seriously there is alot that can be done about this sort of thing if Blacks put in alot more effort investing in their own communities. Such people maybe outed but even if forced to keep the kids, the racism will still be there. Why hang around people that don't want you around.
